Your NATIONAL - Gl n2-13-14 HINDENBURG BLAST LAID TO GAS GELL Couldn’t Tell Direction of Flames, Rigger Tells Probers. ,‘*i; By the Asgciated Press. LAKEHURST, N. J., May 17.—One of thé Hindenburg's riggers, who was on duty close to the spot where the destructive flames first burst forth from her stern, gave the department of Commerce Investigating Board to- day his opinion that a gas cell started the disaster. Hans Freund, the only one of the dirigible's three riggers to survive, was the first witness yet called who was able to give any account of what took place in the stern when the fire and explosion occurred. His story emphasized the speed and lack of warning which characterized the destruction of the dirigible. He had reached a station near the fins, he related, and was attempting to pay out a manila landing cable when it happened. “There was a muffled detonation and I was standing in fire,” he re- lated. “It went so quickly.” Surrounded by Fire. “How far were you from the source of the fire?” he was asked. | “I was surrounded by fire,” he answered. above.” “I had the impression it was a gas cell,” he added after saying he could | not tell whether the flames envelop- | ing him came from the forward or after direction. The flames and ex- plosion were simultaneous, he said. | “From that moment I don’t remember anything until I got out of the fin.” Before that there was nothing wrong and landing preparations had | proceceded in & normal manner, he | said. The cable he was lowering had become temporarily fouled by the | tail surfaces, but that was not un- | usual and another member of the | crew quickly got the cable clear. He felt no shock as he started to drop the cable, he told the board, | and he noticed no glow of static elec- | tricity about it. Abcut 45 feet forward of the tail | cable, Freund said, he had previously drcpped a spider line—a steel line | with many smaller manila ropes at- | tached to it for the ground crew. { There was no static glow here, he said, | and he felt no shock from the line. Freund said he was one of the three men who inspected the dirigible’s gas cells, but the other two perished in the disaster. He could not supply information on the gas level of the last cell in the stern at the trip's end, for he did not have the final watch on that duty. Knew of No Repairs. | Freund knew of no repairs being !mxde to the gas cells even before the ship’s maiden 1937 trip to America started, and could not say whether hydrogen had been valved during the landing maneuvers. During his watch between 2 and 4 pm. as the ship neared Lakehurst, he estimated that | all 16 gas cells were 13 to 14 per cent less than full. “Did you hear anything like struc- ture being ripped or something thrown against it?” | “No,” was his answer to the ques- 1|.ion. which was apparently based on | the possibility a broken propellor blade | may have hurled itself through the | hull, puncturing a gas bag and causing the explosive fire. “Is there any odor to hydrogen?” “Yes, one can smell it,” he said, “and one can tell a leak by the smell.” No Odor, He Testifies | There was no leak smelled during | the voyagle or landing maneuvers, he | testified, and there was no other odor, { such as burning wood or rubber. | He dismissed the possibility that a | 8as pocket could have formed outsids a cell. The ship’s ventilation system prevented this, he said. “Did you ever know of a gas cell valve sticking?” “Yes, in the beginning of last year. I only had to pull at the valve slightly | and it closed.” | One of the board members inquired | 1t a valve had not stuck on a voyage to Brazil last year, causing the gas cell to expand to a dangerous con- | dition. | “Yes,” Freund replied and told how | & differently designed piece was in- stalled and no further trouble had been encountered. He said the Brazil situation could not have recurred on | the ship's last voyage. Questioned further on the cable | he was handling when the fire and | explosion occurred Freund sald it | was a manila line and had caught on | two fin wires. | “Was there any electrical connec- “It came, of course, from | | tion nearby?” “I don’t know of any.” | _“Does it rub against steel any | place?” “No.” “Did any one drop & tool or metal { instrument?” | No. The electric generator was about 100 yards forward of the fin,” he said. C, MONDAY, SOVIET DECREE POINTS TO REORGANIZED ARMY System of Councils o Domintae ‘Was Machine and Fight “Foes” Is Established. By the Associated Press, MOSCOW, May 17.—A system of all-powerful military councils to dom- inate all phases of Soviet military affairs and empowered to fight “the enemies of the people—spies and MAY 17, 1937. wreckers” was established today in & decree issued by the Kremlin. Reorganization of the vast Red war machine was foreshadowed last week by the demotion of Marshal M. N. Tukhachevsky, first vice commissar of war, whose name had been mentioned at the January trial of 16 “Trotzky- ists” accused of anti-Soviet plotting. ‘The Kremlin decree reached into every branch of the military organiza- tion of Soviet Russi. War councils, or Soviets, each in- cluding one army commander and two other officials, will be placed in command of each military unit, As the highest representative of the military power under direct orders from the defense commissariat, the councils were given full jurisdiction over the mobilization of troops, the defense of all military and n n-mili- tary property and as the organization of civillans for front and rear-line duty. Germans Hunt Substitutes. Germans find humor even in their present situation. One of the favorite | jokes in Germany is about “ersats,® ‘the word for substitute, a most po- | tent word there, for they seek sube stitutes for everything in order to conserve.
