THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C., MONDAY, MAY 17, 1937. WHITE SLAVE RAID NETS 20 SUSPECTS Hoover Leads 35 F. B. I Agents in Drive to “Clean - Up” Baltimore. By the Assoctated Press. BALTIMORE, May 17.—Federal agents, staging a Nation-wide drive against vice rings, sought today to de- termine Baltimore's place in the white slave traffic. Thirty-five agents under the per- | sonal direction of J. Edgar Hoover, chief of the Federal Bureau of Investi- gation, raided a number of establish- ments here early yesterday and ar- rested some 50 persons in an effort to “clean up” the city. Their apparent intention, judging from the stories of some of the girls arrested, was to find out whether Bal- timore was a center of operations for the traffic in which girls are lured from their homes for immoral purposes. Hoover said the agents, striving to find the ringleaders of the white slave traffic, already had made raids in Con- necticut and New York and would | make others in places he declined to | name for obvious reasons.
