Nature’s Children Picket Pin Gopher (Citellus armatus). BY LILLIAN COX ATHEY. URIOSITY is a ruliLg passion with these ground squirvels, wrongly called gophers. These little rascals are found in great numbers on the great plains of the West. They live in burrows. and for this reason only have been named gophers. Spermophile is the right name for them, for it means “seed lover,” and | that is what these grain gleaners are. It is this inordinate desire for grain that has called down wrath upon their heads from the farmers. They are home lovers. Sometimes | you will find the entrance to their| dwelling in the crevice of a rock rather | cleverly hidden. They love comfort | and have very cozy apartments at the end of tunnels underground. Because they are not given to stray- ing far from their dwelling, the mound | of dirt at their doorway is often worn smooth. There is always the telltale front yard beaten down by the tramp- ing of the tiny feet as they go and come so frequently from their domicile. Sunbaths and long hours of gossip- Ing seem to intrigue them. You can | ree dozens of them for miles and miles, if you are driving or riding near their | homes, as they loll in the warm sun | eays and enjoy their leisure, | If they have found camps close by, | they will descend upon them looking for scraps. They are clever grass- hopper chasers and con consume an unbelievable number of insects. In the grassy countries Wyoming, Colorado and you may today see the Cattlemen say these consume thousands and | § thousands of dollars’ worth of food in- | tended for their cattle. They also eat! the tender stems of rye, pul stem down to where they can strip it of its head. It is lots of fun to watch them as | they decide to search the landscape for interesting information. They | sort of bend over slightly as they rise on their hind legs, and with a sort of Jerk take their “picket-pin” position. They are about the same width from stem to stern now, and from a distance, if you were not onto their little tricks, you would think they were nothing more than a small stake. Their arms are always folded close to the body. Their bright black eyes see every- thing. So determined not to miss a trick, they will wait until you are al- mest up to them. when they flash abou! and enter their burrow. Safe within their doorway they “sass you" with vim and vigor. As soon as the early” Fall descends upon the plains the little picket-pins turn in for the Winter. In the Spring out they come, all in the best of | humor and fine health. Four and occasionally six babies ar- rive about the middle of May. At least that is the time’they are seen in Colorado. From now on the parents and younger generation have to watch for the foes searching for them. The bear and the coyote and the most dreaded one, the weasel, all hunters of rodents, have small babies demand- ing food. This is the reason such large families must be brought into the world by the little “picket-pins.” (Copyright, 1937, Hunches. Winning Contract VERY bridge player we ever heard of gets hunches. Declarer then ran off nine tricks, which gave him a top score. ‘We think East's psychology was very poor and that he gave away the fact that he held the king as diamonds as surely as if he had exposed his hand. Had East simply returned his fourth club his partner would have subse- quently led a heart and Mr. Uris would then surely have finessed for the king of diamonds and been set & great many tricks.
