Denison Named Bank Auditor. Directors of the Bank of Commerce & Savings, meeting yesterday, elected Harold W. Denison auditor of the bank. The new auditor entered the banking field shortly after his gradu- ation from McKinley High School in 1923, becoming connected with the Riggs National Bank. While at Riggs he took many courses in the American Institute of Banking and became di- rectly connected with the auditing de- partment in 1929. He has been asso- ciated with the Bank of Commerce & Savings since the middle of March and has already assumed his new duties, Vice President Thomas J. Groom announced today. Real Estate Bonds Steady. Unlike the trend in the general bond market during the first quarter of 1937, bonds secured by real cstate properties in the Eastern section of the United States have continued the steady progress in prices that has characterized these issues since the low point of 1933, according to a re- port on its index of 250 real estate bonds made by Eli T. Watson & Co., Inc. The first-quarter gains for all issues included in the index amounted to 2.1 per cent. Chesapeake Corp. has called for re- demption on June 1 all 5 per cent convertible collateral trust bonds, due December 1, 1944, now outstanding at 105. These bonds may be converted on or before the redemption date into common stock of Chesapeake & Ohio Railway Co. After July 1, 1937, no interest will accrue on these bonds. Lively Trading on Exchange. Trading on the Washington Stock Exchange today was characterized by 8 lively demand for bonds. George- town Gas 5s were the most active, five $1.000 transfers taking place at 113%5. Capital Traction 5s were firm at 983Y, and City & Suburban 5s ap- peared on the board again at 84. Washington Railway & Electric 4s registered 106 and 105%. The only stock sale was 20 shares of Real Estate Mortgage & Guaranty pre- ferred at 5%, off % from the last sale. ‘The Securities and Exchange Com- mission has given a tentative draft of over-the-counter regulations to the Investment Bankers' Conference for suggestions and criticism. Washington Chapter, American In- stitute of Banking, will have a forum meeting this evening in the American Security & Trust Co. board room, with a special discussion on “Federal Re- serve Requirements.” KRESGE SALES SHOW GAIN OF 25.8 PER CENT By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, April 7.—Stocks crum- | bled 1 to 5 or more points today in_ | one of the sharpest retreats of the” | year. | Inspiring selling, brokers said, were | recurrent but officially denied rumors the Treasury was contempla slicing its buying price for gold in o: der to put brakes on an incipient Chilling to sentiment also was a brisk drop in major commodities both here and in London and another de- | cline in recently shaky United States | Government securities. Steels, coppers and motors touched off the break in the first hour. They were followed by rail, oil, merchandis- ;| ing and specialty stocks Volume of offerings was so great » in the first and last hours the ticker tape lagged several minutes behind floor dealings. Most former favorites | ended near their low points of the session. Transfers were around 2,200,« | 000 shares. Settlement of the Chrysler strike was virtually ignored, as was a fairly constructive run of business news. “K" was among the first to catapult and failed to come back to any appreciable extent thereafter. | General Motors also yielded a point ‘cr 50 at the worst and Electric Auto- | Lite and Briggs dipped. The spotlig shifted to Ford as a possibility for the | next union drive. Auburn was a contrary member the automotive department, pushi up in the face of the trend. Reo Mo- tors was resistant on reports Eastern capitalists had bought into the com- pany. Announcement was also made that Reo’s lengthy labor controversy had been adjusted.
