THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, b, WURSDAY, MalCil 1v, AU Nature’s White Bass (Coccus chrysops). BY LILLIAN COX ATHEY. HROUGHOUT the Great Lakes region from the St. Lawrence t» Manitoba and south in the Mississippi Valley as far as the Ouachita River in Arkansas you may have lots of sport trying to land the white bass. He is not found in salt ‘water, but loves the cool, deep, quiet waters in the lakes. Unlike his cousins, he rarely enters small streams. Size has nothing to do with the | white bass' courage. He is a born fighter, about 12 to 18 inches long, and tips the scales at one to two pounds. Every ounce of him is spunk. His bump of intelligence is not high- Iy developed, or he would not so| readily go after the bait dangled be- fore him. His is & one-track mind. He leaps, then realizes that the prize is a death sentence unless he makes every | effort to free himself—and at the cost of badly lacerated jaws Usually the bait used is a grub or angleworm, or perhaps a minnow, too tempting for the white bass to resist He will rise to the fly every time. Then begins the fun for the angler, the de- Ppair for the white bass. The eggs are semi-buoyant. They sink to the bottom, but will come quickly to the surface if the water is disturbed. When the water is abcut 60 degrees the eggs hatch within 74 hours. By Autumn the young fry are about 2 inches long. | Bass live to a ripe old age—10 to 12 years old. Some members of the family, like the striped bass, are very much larger fish, with a life tenure of 20 years.
