The Federal Reserve Board re- corded a substantial rise in loans to industry, commerce and agriculture and a further drop in holdings of Gov- ernment securities during the week ended March 10. The board’s condition statement for 101 citles showed demand deposits of $15,649,000,000, an increase of $148,- 000,000 during the week, apparently reflecting a tendency to build up bal- ances to meet tax payments. Reserves with Federal Reserve banks climbed $71,000,000, to $5,242,000,000, due in part to withdrawals from domestic banks totaling $38,000,000. Loans to business, agriculture and industry, regarded as an important index of credit demand stood at $4,- 253,000,000 on March 10, $62,000,000 over the same week last year.
