Fifty years old today, the Columbia National Bank is rounding out half & century of gratifying progress and growth at 911 F street northwest, the milestone being observed in a quiet manner by the officers and directors of the institution, of which Frank J. Stryker is president. The bank has a record of which eny financial institution might well be proud. Deposits on December 31, 1887, totaled $390,533.72, growing in the 49-year interval to $5,366,527.68 on December 31, 1936. Capital assets in the form of capital, surplus and undivided profits stood at $267,744.12 on December 31, 1887, and December 31, 1936, had grown to $256,655.95. ‘The bank’s records show that a pre- liminary meeting was held on Novem- ber 2, 1886, at the office of H. B. Warn- er & Co., 916 F street, “the purpose of which was to organize a national bank on F street.” The articles of association, dated November 15 that year, were signed by the following ‘Washington men, who also became the first board of directors: Brainard H. Warner, John Joy Ed- son, Samuel M. Bryan, George Trues- dell, George C. Maynard, Alexander T. Britton, Samuel Ross, A. F. Fox, My- yon M. Parker, H. K. Willard, W. E. Barker, David L. Morrison, Stilson | Hutchins, John E. Herrell and Charles | C. Duncanson. Charter Granted in 1887. The charter was granted Mreasury Department on Janual 1887. In the five decades Columbia Bank has had onl: idents, Brainard H. Warne! November 15, 1886; E. S. Park ed April 7, 1891; Albert S. Fox, placed in office June 8, 1897; James A. Mas- ser, named to the presidency October 5, 1922,and Frank J. St placed in charge of the bank on May | 1, 1924 The bank has had six vice presidents, the names including three of the men who were later advanced to the presi- dent’s chair—A. T. Britton, elected November 15, 1386: Albert F. Fox, January 20, 1891; Charles B. Bail June 8, 1897; Benjamin W. Guy.| April 27, 1909: F. J. Stryker. Octo 6, 1922; L. The Federal Reserve Bank of mond reported today that stock goods on hand in Washington depart- | ment stores on December 31, 1935, | were 12.7 per cent higher n on the | same date in 1935. Stocks, howev er, | were 21 per cent lower than at the | end of November, reflecting the re- | markably heavy Christmas trade. Dur- | 4ng 1936 stocks in the stores here were turned 4.903 times, against 4.467 as the average for the fifth distri | As already noted, department store trade in Washington was 8.2 per cent | ahead of December, 1935, and for the | full year was 9.6 per cent above the | 1935 record. The figure was also | fractionally ahead of the 1936 average ! for the whole fifth district, 9.6 per | cent. | Collections in Washington in De- | cember were 27.8 per cent of bills due, | in Baltimore 32 per cent and in the | ‘whole district 30.3 per cent of receiv- | ables due at the beginning of the| month. | B. & O. Operating Net Climbs. | The Baltimore & Ohio R. R. today | reported net railway operating income “ in 1936 as $30,185,305, compared with | $24,184,983 in 1935, or a gain of $6,- | 000,332. Freight revenues were up | more than $25,000,000 during the year | and passenger revenues showed a gain of $1,293,467. Operating e: penses increased by over $18,000,000. Net railway operating income in De- cember totaled $2,613,352, an increase of $630,178 over December, 1935. Freight revenues mounted $2,679,775 and passenger returns were $77,506 | higher than a year ago. Expenses | also increased. i Fine Red Cross Responses, ‘Washington banks reported today that very generous subscriptions are being received to the National Red Cross relief fund. Posters were put up today telling patrons at what windows the gifts are being received. Many‘ calls for more receipt blanks showed how fast money was coming in. Victor B. Deyber, secretary of the Washington Clearing House Associa- tion, received word today from Pitts- burgh that the Eastern Regional Bank- ing Conference will open tomorrow without any delay. Train service is normal and all plans ready. Mary- land, Virginia and West Virginia are among the 18 States and the District of Columbia which are to be rep- resented. The auditors’ section of the Dis- trict Bankers' Association and the five pres= elected i | safe deposit section will hold a joint dinner meeting tomorrow evening at the La Fayette Hotel, with A. H. Troeger, president of the Maryland State Safe Deposition Association as guest speaker. William S. Yeatman, auditors’ chairman, will preside. Pay Increased 10 Per Cent. Howard Eagles, manager of the ‘Washington office of the Standard Ac- cident Insurance Co., Detroit, has been notified that the pay of all employes has been raised 10 per cent, begin- ning January 1, due to business growth in 1936.
