By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, January 27.—United States Government obligations stif- fened in the bond market today as banks turned to the buying side fol- lowing postponement of action by the Federal Reserve Board on excess re- serves. Around midday Treasuries in de- mand at fair advances were the 2738 and the 2%s. The 31,s of 1946 came under a little pressure. Dealers de- scribed buying as mild and said most of it came from banks which had tired of waiting for lower prices in the event of a Federal Reserve Board decision to tighten the money market by ctsbing expansion of excess bank reserves. After am uneven start, corporate Joans put on a general advance. Gainers of fractions were American Water Works 6s, Santa Fe 4s, St. Paul 5s, national Telephone Central 4%s. Tube 3!3s Fractions were lost by Loew's 31.s, Missouri Pacific 5s and Erie 5s. Burroughs Adding Machine Boosts Rate on Common' By the Associated Press. P the Associated Press. NEW YORK, January 27.—Gener- ally favorable conditions continue in the steel industry despite floods and labor troubles in the motor field, Iron Age said today in its weekly review. “Floods have reduced production sharply in the Ohio River Valley,” the trade journal said, “but elsewhere neither high water nor automobile strikes have appreciably affected the industry, which is working at top speed on heavy backlogs plus a Janu- ary volume of orders that for many companies exceeds that for any month last year excepting December.” The Wheeling and Cincinnati dis- tricts are hardest hit by flood waters, the review said. In the Wheeling dis- trict plants are virtually idle, as are diate Cincinnati territory. “On Monday the American Iron & Steel Institute estimated the week’s steel operating rate at 77.9 per cent of capacity, but enforced shutdowns since then bring the Iron Age estimate to 75 per cent,” the review continued. “Steel scrap has declined 50 cents conditions, but has risen 75 cents at Chicago and $1 at Philadelphia, where | export buying is a strong influence. { The Iron Age scrap composite has risen to $1883." h | NEW YORK BAR SILVER.
