T IS rare, indeed, that a partner- ship is able to contract success- fully for a grand slam when hav- ing an advanced part score. The fact that North and South, who are not considered particularly good play- ers in the bridge circles wherein they | compete, did bid and make a grand slam only goes to show how the gen- eral standard of contract bidding has improved in recent years. East Pass Pass Pass After South’s opening spade bid, | West, who_is conceded to be a con- | servative player, put in a two-club | overcall. Now, while North held a | strong hand, his own suit was far from | solid and he held only two cards of his partner’s bid. Hence, all he could | do was to bid two hearts. In view | of his partner's free bid, South de- cided his hand warranted a slam in- | vitation. But he had quite a problem | as to exactly what slam invitation to give. Finally he decided that it was important to find a fit for his spades, Beginners’ Classes Accountancy and Business Administration Courses Leading to B. C. S. North's king-jack | of spades doubleton was now ample | support, since his partner had shown | & six or seven card sult, so he jumped | to five spades. At this point South made a fine bid, | to wit, six clubs. The cue-bid in clubs { showed not only that he held first- round control in that suit, but also | that he was interested in a grand | slam. Otherwise, he would simply have bid six spades. North would have had | to pass six spades. However, his part- = | ner's cue-bid had invited seven, and | North saw no reason to hesitate | further. He bid the grand slam. Of course, the hand was a laydown, | but there were quite a few pitfalls in the bidding, and we feel certain that many pairs would not have reached the same fine grand slam contract. It is true that the grand slam would probably have been reached if South had made an immediate cue-bid fol- lowing his partner’s two-heart Bid.
