Gilbert Gibson Fletcher, 60, of No. 20 Engine Company, who had been decorated for rescue work, died Saturday in George Washing- ton University Hospital. He had been ill about two weeks. Lieut. Fletcher, who lived at 4209 Ellicott street, was a native of Loudoun County, Va. Appointed to the District Fire Department on October 3, 1907, he was pro- moted to sergeant March 21, 1923, and to lieutenant May 24, 1927. He received a ribbon decoration, ordered by the District Commissioners, for his work in the Knickerbocker ‘Theater disaster in January, 1922, and also received a ribbon for rescue work in February, 1923. CHEYENNE, Wyo., January 18.—A heart attack, suffered last night while visiting in the city where he was born, was fatal for Robert D. Carey, 58, former United States Senator and one- time Governor of Wyoming. Cary, operator of a 70,000-acre ranch in Central Wyoming and an authority on Western agriculture, was the first “native son” ever to represent his State in Congress. A Republican, he went to the Senate in 1930 to serve out the unexpired term of the late Francis E. Warren, and that same year was elected for a six- year term. He was defeated for re- election last November by Harry H. Schwartz, Democrat. Like his father, Carey long was an advocate of Western reclamation and was interested in many projects. Appointed by Coolidge. President Coolidge appointed him chairman of a conference which sur- veyed agricultural conditions in the He was mentioned as a possible choice for Secretary of Agriculture in the Coolidge cabinet. Carey served as Governor of Wyo- ming from 1919 to 1923.
