Daily average sales of general merchandise in small towns and rural areas reached an all-time high in De- cember. Dollar volume for the month increased 19!z per cent from Decem- ber, 1935, and was almost 5 per cent above the corresponding month of 1929. These changes were revealed by preliminary estimates of the Bu- reau of Foreign and Domestic Com- merce, based on rural chain store and mail order sales. Total sales for the year 1936 were 15!2 per cent above the corresponding period of 1935 and were only 8 per cent below the total for 1929. Secretary Heimann of the National Association of Credit Men tells the ‘Washington office that business faces & paradoxical year in 1937. The new year will witness better business con- ditions and, at the same time, it will be a more troublesome period for business management. The year 1937 will show an improvement over 1936, but the rate of improvement, with the exception of the heavy goods indus- tries, may not make as excellent a comparison with 1936 as that year did with 1935. Today's Trading on Exchange. The week’s market opened with 100 shares of Real Estate Mortgage & Guaranty preferred selling on the Washington Stock Exchange at 6Y.
