NEW YORK, January 18.—Echoes of the breakdown in the General Mo- tors strike negotiations reached the curb market today and virtually all departments sold off from fractions to more than 2 points. Metal shares were weak, with both , Aluminum Co. of America and New- mont down by around 3 points. Great Atlantic & Pacific lost more than 2. Others lower by a point or more in- cluded Sherwin Williams, Pan-Amer- ican Airways and Gulf Oil. Some utilities resisted, with gains of fractions to around a point. They included Commonwealth Edison, United Light & Power “A” and American Super Power. Babcock & Wilcox was up 7 points on light » Volume. Federal fieficit Advances Above Billion and Half Br the Ascociated Press. The Government's deficit for this fiscal vear crossed the $1,500,000,000 mark on January 15. The Treasury reported today that with receipts of $2.321,732,756 and ex- - penditures of $3.826,214,903 since July 1. the deficit stood at $1,504,482.147. * This compared with a $1,986,266,029 | deficit for the corresponding period Jast year. CHICAGO, January 18.—A 8.5 per cent increase in the volume of dis- play advertising placed in newspapers by retailers during the week ended January 9, 1937, compared with the same week of 1936, is reported today by Advertising Age, national adver- tising newspaper. Basing its figures on reports cover- ing all of the newspapers in 71 major cities, Advertising Age says that re- tail advertising in those cities totaled 16,210,708 lines for the week, a gain of 1,275,546 lines over the 1936 total of 14,935,162 lines. For the first two weeks of 1937, re- tail advertising in these cities is 1.8 per cent ahead of the same period of last year, the publication says. This year's total is 26,385,842, compared with 25,916,730 during the correspond= ing period of 1936. This is an actual increase of 469,112 lines. NEW YORK, January 18.—Lang- bourne M. Williams, jr., president of Freeport Sulphur Co., today an- nounced signing of a lease on prop- erty from Stanolind Oil & Gas Co., of Tulsa, Okla. ‘The property, known as the Hock- ley Dome, is in Harris County, Tex. Although terms of the lease were |not disclosed, Williams said, “the ;mmpany is alwaws desirous of ob- taining new reserves where produc- tion may be undertaken at lower cost.” Drilling operations will start |in less than 60 days, he said.
