INFLUENZA CASES ARE WIDESPREAD New York and Chicago Are Hard Hit as Epidemic Misses South. By .3e Associated Press. A sweeping increase in influenza and pneumonia cases over large sec- tions of the United States was re- ported today by medical authorities. Unseasonably warm weather was said by many to be a contributing cause. New York, hardest hit of any city, suffered 598 deaths in the last week. Health Department officials there pre- dicted the number of cases, now tabu- lated jointly at 1814, would begin showing & decrease next week and that the outbreak of influenza would have completed its course of four or five weeks before the end of January. The influenza and pneumonia death rate in Chicago continued unabated, with 710 deaths in the 2,987 cases re- ported since December 1. ©One of the few sections untouched s the South. Atlanta reported only eight “flu” cases up until December 31, as against 3¢ on the same date last Winter. iWew Orleans reported only six cases since January 1, but authorities were preparing for a “flu” invasion which they said they feared “visitors might bring.” Miami said it had no influenza and Jacksonville reported only a few cases. Little Rock had from 400 to 500 cases and influenza was noted to be on the increase throughout Arkansas, but Dr. W. B. Grayson, State health officer, said: “It is nothing to get alarmed over.” However, in Monette, Ark., with 1,111 population, 150 cases caused the closing of schools. Except for a few mild cases in Maine, Vermont and Connecticut, no abnormal conditions were reported in New England. The health commissioner of Bpokane, Wash., reported an influenza and pneumonia epidemic second to 1918 only in severity. Hospitals there were taxed to the limit, with space available only for emergency cases. State health authorities in Oregon said there were no unusual number of cases as yet, but “we expect them as the result of the cold snap and the THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. Geiger, city health director, said there was no “flu” epidemic, but doctors reported “an epidemic of upper r¢spiratory in- fections.” Influenza was prevalent throughout Minnesota, but mainly in mild forms from which doctors said their patients were recovering quickly. The health department of Fargo, N. Dak, said “flu” cases appeared to 1,000 between December 20 and Janu- ary 1. A few rural school boards in South Dakota asked to have schools closed, but authorities said there were not | many more influenza cases than the average for this time of year. In Milwaukee, Dr. John P. Koehler, city health commissioner, said there had been 23 pneumonia and 20 influ- enza deaths in the last five days. He reported: “The situation is the same be waning there, with only 100 cases | &nd 192! under treatment as compared with Health authorities in Towa termed or tomorrow.
