Receipts at the Washington City Post Office in December smashed all monthy records in the history of the Capital, it was learned today. Never since the city was founded has money for postal service poured into the vari- ous windows as it did during the clos- ing month of 1936. December postal receipts totaled $928,349.98 in comparison with $856.- 594 a year ago, an increase of $71.755.98. They were also far ahead of the previous month of November, when receipts amounted to $636,586. 'To carry the comparison back further, the total of more than $928,000 is much larger than the December, 1934, figure of $732,452 and $658991 in December 1933. Up to December the best months for postal receipts in Washington in 1936 were November, October, April and March. The December receipts reflect the enormous Christmas trade that was reported in the city as well as the gen- eral advance in normal business to new high levels. December .. ‘Totals ___$7,357,041 $6,738,488 Thus, the summary reveals a gain in postal revenues in the past 12 months of $618,553. Bankers Discuss Auto Loans. Washington bankers, at their week- 1y luncheon at the Willard this noon, paid special attention to the subject of financing the purchase of automobiles. For some time several banks in the Capital have been discounting notes secured by liens on automobiles. Sev- eral problems have arisen as to the best methods of handling this type of loans and the best ways of procedure ‘were talked over at the meeting today. Some time ago a letter on the sub- Ject was sent to all members of the District Bankers’ Association, and later & committee was appointed to give the matter careful study. The special committee consisted of C. F. Burton, president, City Bank, chairman; John A. Reilly, president Second National, and Hilleary G. Hoskinson, vice presi- dent, Riggs National, and also second vice president of the association. ‘The committee has already made a complete and thorough report, which formed the basis of today's discussions. 1t is understood that the subject is be- ing given attention more from a pro- tective viewpoint than the launching of a drive for more new business. First Vice President Thomas J. Groom presided. He reported that President Karl W. Corby is making very favorable improvement. Acacia Reports Record Year. A new, all-time record of progress ‘was written during 1936 by the Acacia Mutual Life Insurance Co., it was an- nounced today by William Montgom- ery, president. “The volume of insurance in force passed the previous peak and today exceeds $365,000,000, a net increase of more than $12,700,000 for the year,” he stated. “New paid-for insurance amounted to more than $38,000,000, while the assets advanced by $6,000,000 to more than $66.000,000, the latter figure an increase of 95 per cent since the year 1929.” ‘The District of Columbia branch registered a 37 per cent increase in paid-for insurance during the year as compared with 1935, and the vol- ume of insurance in force in Wash- ington advanced to $25,000,000. U. S. Competition Data Sought. Just how much Government lending egencies are competing with banks all over the country is to be learned by the Committee on Banking Studies of the American Bankers' Association, which has just sent out a question- naire to member banks and also to State bankers' associations. Wilmer J. Waller, vice president of the Ham- ilton National Bank, this city, is a member of the committee. The questionnaire refers specifically to the Federal Land Banks, the land bank commissioner, Production Credit Associations, Banks for co- operatives and Federal Savings and Loan Associations. It asks whether these agencies are in competition with the.bank addressed and whether the subject is of sufficient importance to the bank to warrant a detailed study of their operations in its county. It also asks whether any other Government lending agencies are con- sidered as being in competition with the bank, what these agencies are and what specific counter-measures it has been taking. Washington banks will furnish their share of the de- sired data. Today’s Trading on Exchange. Security Storage led trading on the Washington Stock Exchange today Wwith 50 shares moving at 125. Capital Transit was strong, opening &t 15, and closing at 152, a new high mark for several weeks. Riggs National Bank common was in demand again tday, 330%. Eighty shares of Real Estate Mortgage & Guaranty preferred came out at 6% and Capital Traction 5s were particu- larly strong, changing hands at 95. Liberty National, American Secur- {ty, Norfolk & Washington Steamboat Co. and Security Storage stocks are being quoted ex-dividend. Heard in Financial Distriet. ‘The Maryland Casualty Co. in 1936 showed a gain of $2,108,000 in nst premiums, it was announced by Silliman Evans, president. The net premiums for the year were 39 per cent more than the figure for 1933 and within 17 per cent of the com- pany’s 1929 high. Cosmopolitan Office Building & ‘Theater first 7 per cent bonds of 1938, which were called for redemption as of January 1 at 103 and accrued in- terest, were issued by a Chicago firm on the Earle Building here. They were ‘widely bought in the Capital. The Union Bank & Trust Co. and Port Royal Bank have been merged under the name of the Union Bank & Trust Co, of Bowling Green, Va. Thomas H. NEW YORK, January 8.—Buyers again were out in force during today's stock market session and prices were lifted fractions to 3 or more points over an exceptionally broad front. Wall Street gave a favorable recep- tion to the President’s budget mes- sage. The recommendation for ex- { parsion of the Army and Navy enli- | vened aircrafts, steels, shipbuilding issues and many others. A late upturn in the rails spurred the list to its best performance in the | final hour. The ticker tape was fre. quently in arrears and transfers ap- | proximated 3,300,000 shares. Automotive stocks were backward as strikes spread in General Motors plants, but they did better near the finish. At the same time State and Federal conciliators were striving to bring about negotiations between the | company and the unions. The major motor maker also announced Decem- ber world sales were the largest for any month on record. Shares were forced to absorb con- siderable selling at intervals, but this was accomplished without much diffi- culty, The steels turned up in the ! afternoon following morning reac- tions. The activity was pronounced in the first hour when 800,000 shares changed hands. There were subsequent slow periods. United States Steel touched a 1936- | 37 high with a gain of about a point.
