By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, January 8—Trade and industry followed a zigzag course this week, Dun & Bradstreet reported today in the weekly survey. Expansion was less marked in some trade divisions, while in others mo- mentum gathered force following the interruption of the holidays. Con- sumer buying was well sustained by January promotions and the enlarged call for Winter needs in districts touched by subzero weather, Low inventories brought more ac- tivity in whole.ale markets, with in- terest wide in both current replace- ments and Easter merchandise. In- dustrial progress was slackened not only by year-end shutdowns, but by the spread of labor complications in some automobile plants and allied branches. “January promotions, which fea- tured retail selling during the week,” the agency said, “attracted a generous response to the somewhat restricted offerings. ‘White’ sales were less nu- merous than at this season last year and price mark downs were smaller.” The agency estimated retail sales for the country as a whole at from 10 to 15 per cent ahead of the same week in 1936, although gains lacked uniformity. Percentage gains in the major geographical areas were: New England, 12 to 16; East, 12 to 18; Middle West, 12 to 15; Northwest, 10 to 12; South, 12 to 20; Southwest, 10 to 20; Pacific Coast, 4 to 8. The strike continued to be a retarding factor in the latter district, the re- port said. The weekly condition statement of all Reserve banks showed a further in- crease of $55,000,000 in member bank reserve balances, swelling the total to $6,627,000,000, an amount which the Board estimated to be about $2,010,- 000,000 in excess of legal requirements. This rise was occasioned by a return of $77,000,000 of money in circulation, mainly month-end cash. Money in circulation on January 6 was $6,473,~ 000,000. The statement said: “The daily average volume of Fed- eral Reserve bank credit outstanding during the week ended January 6, as reported by the Federal Reserve Innn, was $2,481,000,000, & decrease of $37,- 000,000 compared with the preceding week and an increase of $1,000,000 ;::n;;;;;z:'d with the corresponding week Changes in the amount of Reserve Bank credit outstanding and in re- lated items during the week and the year ended January 6, 1937, were re- m as follows (in millions of dol- Dec 30, w: 4 Jan 8.
