| WAR TRANSPORT “NAVY HEAD DIES Admiral Albert Gleaves to Be Buried After Rites Here - Tomorrow. Death yesterday closed the dis- tinguished career. of Admiral Albert Gleaves, U. 8. N., retired, who super- vised the tremendous task of trans- porting the American Army to France and won world-wide fame as the man who “took them over and brought them back.” He died at 79 at suburban Haverford, near Philadelphia, where he had made his home since he was retired in 1022, The Navy Department said funeral services will be held here tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. in St. John's Church, to be followed by burial in Arlington Na- tional Cemetery. The death of Admiral Gleaves re- moves another of the Navy's World ‘War leaders and yet another of the full admirals on the retired list. He commanded the cruiser and transport force during the war and is credited with having sent some 2,000,000 men overseas “without a single loss of life.” Retired in 1922, He was born January 1, 1858, at Nashville, Tenn., and after a dis- tinguished career transferred to the retired list at 64 on January 1, 1922. The Navy had further duty in store for him, however, because in 1928 he ‘was appointed governor of the Naval Home at Philadelphia and held that post until 1931. The War Department also gave him a Distinguished Service Medal, the President of the Czecho- slovakian Republic awarded him the ‘War Cross with lime tree leaves, the President of Chima bestowed ubon him the Order of the Striped Tiger, first class; Japan gave him the Grand Cordon of the Sacred Treasury and France made him a commander of the Legion of Honor. This distinguished sailor was well known in Washington and came here J | to duty in 1886 at the Navy Yard in conjunction with ordnance, returning in 1893 and 1898 as a junior officer. In 1901 he commanded the Dolphin, which was used as the Secretary of the Navy's yacht. and later he commanded the Mayvflower, which was used by Presidents of the United States, Was Assistant Secretary, In 1909 he was back at the Capital on duty in the office of the Absistant | Secretary of the Navy, and for a short | time during the War he was on tem- { porary duty in the office of the chief | PR | of naval operations. Before the United States en- tered the war he commanded the tor- pedo flotilla, and his able administra- tion is credited with having these vessels in readiness for immediate service in Europe as soon as Uncle Sam joined the conflict. His native .| Tennemee presented Admiral Gleaves with a jeweéled sword and the City of Hoboken, N, J,, from which a great meny troops sailed for France, pre- sented him with a gold watch. Admiral Gleaves also was the author of several biographies of famous naval men. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Eve- line Heap Gleaves, and two daughters, Mrs, T. E. Van Meter, wife of Comdr. Van Meter, U. 8. N, on duty at the Naval War College here, and Mrs. A. M. Cohen of Philadeiphia. NOVENA PLANNED Dominican Fathers Announce Rites Opening Sunday. The Dominican Fathers today an- nounced & solemn novena in honor of Mary, queen of the rosary, to be held at St. Dominic’s Church, Sixth and E streets southwest, from Sunday to Monday, January 18, the arduous job of transporting the American Army to France. Entering the Naval Academy at 15, Admiral Gleaves was graduated when 19 years old. His first cruise was on the former flagship of Admiral Far- ragut, the Hartford, and the early part of his career took him to Europe and Asia. He became interested early in ordnance and made & name for him- self as a gunnery officer. The Dolphin, described as “the first of the new steel vessels,” was one of his favorite ships, for he witnessed the transition from wooden ships and sails to steam and steel. The admiral, as a lieutenant, com- manded the Cushing, which is re- membered as “the first modern tor- pedo boat in our Navy.” Admiral Gleaves played an outstanding part in the development of torpedoes.
