By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, January T7.—Higher prices ruled in the bond market today, with activity centering on domestic corporate issues. Following a slow opening, most sec- tions of the list gained support as trading proceeded. Rails, which started shakily, steadied and worked higher. Speculative carriers made gains rang- ing to major fractions. The United States Government group teetered slightly, with gains the more impressive. Improvement ranged to !a and losses to 2-32ds of a point. Foreign bonds moved up on light volume, with German and.Japanese issues out in front, up major fractions. Italian obligations edged higher and most South Americans made some headway. Waslungton Exchange SALES. Capital Transit Co.—10 at 15. Washington Gas Light—5 at 82. iges Bank com.—5 at 330. CLEVELAND, January 17—} Metal Trade today says: De'plu lhl ment suspensions ordered motive consumers, lleflmlklnl opera- tions at midweek are unchanged at 79 per cent of ingot capacity. Fallure of the ingot rate to reflect the automotive situation is accounted for by the fact suspensions by that in- dustry have permitted steelmakers to divert a larger proportion of produc- tion to miscellaneous and general manufacturing lines. Uniess the automotive trouble is pro- tracted, it is not believed steel produc- tion will be greatly affected. General consumers continue to press for de- liveries, although new buying is re- stricted. The tone of the market con- tinues strong. ——— INSURANCE STOCKS NEW YORK. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, January 7.—A meas- ure of the Christmas crescendo to the 1936 rise in retail trade was provided today in monthly reports of chain store organizations. Generally they confirmed expecta- tions of wide gains over December, 1935. In part the increase was attrib- uted to an extra shopping day during the 1936 Christmas buying rush. Nevertheless, the breadth of the gains was taken in trade eircles as evi- dence of a real buying splurge, fed by the year-end outpouring of extra divi- dends, wage increases and bonuses for employes. Chains operating stores in many 312 | States showed increases for the month ranging up to about 20 per cent. Improvement in December, riding the usual holiday shopping surge, out- ran for most reporting systems per- centage gains for the full year over % <1935 Variety ‘stores, feeling demand for toys and Christmas gifts, turned in impressive figures. F. W, Woolworth Co. reported December sales were nearly 15 per cent ahead of 1935, com- pared with a full year gain of slightly more than 8 per cent. The total rose to $45,505,958 from $39,588,510 in the 1935 month and for the year to $290,- 378,401, compared with $268,744,185 in 1935. 8. 8. Kresge Co. reported December sales totaling $24,350,698, against $21,- 551,894 in December, 1935, an increase of 12.9 per cent. For the year sales were up to $148,710,181 from 8133.- 885,837 in 1935, an increase of .8 per cent. The Pontiac Division of General Motors noted December retail sales set a new record for the month at 21,486 cars, an incrgase of 90 per cent over the 1935 figure. Following a year-to-year decrease Grant Co. stepped December sales up to $16,867,451, compared with $14,- 810,365 in the 1935 month, a rise of 13.9 per cent. For the year the total was $97,891,288, against $91,971,163, an increase of 6.4 per cent. Lerner stores figured December sales at a gain of 20 per cent over the 1935 figure, compared with a year-to- year increase of 15.6 per cent for the preceding 11 months. December busi- ness of McCrory stores was up 7.1 per cent, against a full year gain of 7.5 per cent. INVESTING COMPANIES NEW YORK. NEW YORK, January 7.—Diamonds have come back in & big way from those evil depression days when “Un- cle” would take one look at a fine stone and shrug his shoulders. The “investment” demand for fine cut stone of 1 carat or more has been 50 persistent and appareintly limitless during the past few years that there is now something of a scarcity. Not only wealthy Americans, but East Indians, Britons, Austrians, Hungari- ans, French and Belgians, have par- ticipated in that demand. Sydney H. Ball, whose chapter on “Gem Stones” in the minerals year- book of the Bureau of Mines is the Bible of the trade in this country, says in his 1936 opus, just released, that the trade shows improvement in vir- tually every index. And he adds that “De Beers is so confident of the future that the Dutoitspan mine was reopened in March, 1936, and a sec- year.” Values Gain Sharply. Piecing out Mr. Ball's review, which covers 1935, with later estimates, find dlamond prices have increased 20 to 30 per cent during the last year rough stones in September, 1935. Prices of large cut stones also ad- vanced in 1935, while small polished stones, held back for a time by com- petition between the cutting centers, began to follow the up-trend of rough stones late that year. On the “investment” angle Mr. Ball makes the interesting notation that “India has been, perhaps, the most important buyer of diamonds in late years, and when the price of gold was raised converted much of its store into fme gems.” | The United States increased its dia- mond imports by about 57 per cent in 1935, and Hungary and Austria increased their purchases markedly, | the gem authority says. According | to estimates, the pace of diamond im- | portation into this country was sharply | accelerated in 1936, with a gain of 140 per cent in cut stones in the first eight months, as compared with the | like period of 1935. In the same period | importations of uncut diamonds were | up 137 per cent. World Sales Climb. ‘World sales of diamonds for 1936 are esimated by Dun & Bradstreet at $41,500,00, as against $31,250,000 in 1935 and $18,500,000 in 1934. Sales | of rough stones by the Diamond Trad- | ing Co.—the single sales unit which | since 1934 has functioned co-opera- tively for the principal producers— exceeded £6.000,000 in 1935, Mr. Ball finds, which was an increase of 55 per cent over sales for 1934. With the exception of Italy, recent trends have been toward reduction of tariffs on diamond imports. | Early in 1935 Japan reduced the tariff on diamonds from 100 per cent ad valorem to 5 per cent ad valorem on industrial stones and 10 per cent on gem stones. In February, 1936, Indian duties on diamonds were re- duced from 25 to 10 per cent. But in February, 1935, Italy in- creased the duty on precious stones from 3 to 6 per cent, and imports are strictly controlled. (Copyright, 1037.) RUBBER FUTURES. NEW YORK. Opposition Plan Drafted by Cosdenf Oil Stock Group By the Associated Press. NEW-YORK, January 7.—C. Shelby Carter, chairman of Common Stock~ hnldern Protective Committee of Cos« m Oil Corp., said today his commit- ue would submit a reorganization plan in opposition to that proposed by the management. In a letter to shareholders Carter de« clared several features of the manage- ment’s plan were “unreasonable and unwarranted.” Its provision for com= mon stock purchase options to the management and underwriting fees were characterized as unfair to equity holders, “The plan,” Carter said, “fails to take into account the increased earn- ing capacity of the company, as re- ported by the trustee during recent months, and overlooks the probabilities of future profitable operations.” The Federal Court at Fort Worth, Tex., is scheduled to hold a hearing on the management plan January 22.
