PILOTTORECENE BURIAL AS HERO Lieut. Christopher, ~ Who Saved Life on Ocean, to Rest in Arlington. A hero's buriel in Arlington National Cemetery Wednesday was planned to- day for Lieut. Luke Christopher, fa- mous fiyer, who lost his life while saving that of another, when his Coast Guard amphibian plane crashed into stormy Atlantic Ocean waters Saturday off Assateague, Va. Meanwhile, a Coast Guard board of | inquiry today began an investigation | into the cause of the crash. Lieut. Christopher, the pilot, who was well | known here, was a man of long ex- | § perience in the air, not only for the | Coast Guard, but with other branches ©of the Government. | The fiver, formerly a test pilot for the Government, died at the Coast Guard Station at Assateague, 65 miles south of Salisbury, Md. But the man whose life he saved—John Barrina, | a sailor—taken from the Standard | Oil Co. tanker Charles G. Black, at gea, was recovering today from an appendicitis operation in a Salisbury hospital. Help Call for Sick Man. Christopher lost his life in a struggle started when a call came from the| tanker that a sick man on board needed help. The Coast Guard am- phibian V-125 flew to the tanker cnd‘ took the sick man aboard. Heavy seas broke one of the plane’s pontoons, however, and she drifted helplessly. A surf boat from the Assateague sta- tion picked up Barrina, but Lieut.|s Loren H. Seegar, in command of the | amphibian, ordered his crew to stay on the plane. The plane drifted until| after 1 a.m., when the crew was res- | cued by the cutter Ponchatrain. Christopher picked up the stricken eailor at the shore station in an am- phibian V-111 and, with two members of a crew, started to fly to Norfolk. Shortly after, a Coast Guardsman patrolling the beach heard faint cries in the darkness. A life boat rushed to the scene, and found the V-111 nose down in the water. Christopher was trapped in the cockpit with water up to his neck. Extricated from his trap, he was rushed to shore, but died at the Coast Guard station. Strenuous Dive Tests. Christopher, regarded by aviators as one of the best test pilots who ever donned a helmet, wrecked himself physically performing a highly im- portant series of “terminal velocity” dive tests for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics at Langley Field, Va. To determine the strength of & new type of pursuit airplane he made sev- ral “terminal velocity” tests, pulling harply out of vertical power dives. During the change of directivn the| forces were so great that Christopher | suffered hemorrhages behind both eyes, impaired hearing and other dis- | abilities which forced him to abandon ! test flying. The results of the test, | however, are regarded as a great con- tribution toward advar.cement of air- craft construction. D Hebrew Scholar Dies. JERUSALEM, December 7. Alarmed, the grebe sinks like lead in the water and can swim for a long distance. His nostrils are slightly above the surface of the water | and it is almost impossible to locate him. | On land he is in danger.
