FINANCIAL. BY PEOPLES DRUG Common Stock Advances to $59.50 a Share on New York Market. BY EDWARD C. STONE. Peoples Drug Stores common stock, which is'listed on the Washingtca Stock Excharige and also on the New ‘York Exchange, has just sold at an- other new peak for 1936, $59:50 a ghare. This figure was reached in Wall Street, where most of the recent sales have taken place. ‘The stock has made outstanding progress so far ‘this year, having doubled in value. Starting with a low mark of $30 a share, the price has advanced without any particular- ly spectacular moves to its present position. Good earnings reports have helped the stock hold its gains. The latest report on Peoples Drug earnings showed an increase of 145 per cent in October over October, 1935, and an advance of 9.6 per cent in the first 10 months of 1936 over the like period last year. This re- port, out a few days ago, no doubt has called special attention to the stock. Peoples Drug Stores 6!, per cent preferred stock changed hands at $112 & share in the last sale on the Washington Exchange. The stock has remained in a fairly narrow range during the year, with a low of $110.50 # share and a high mark of $114.50. Other issues on the local board which have recently scored top prices for 1936 include Security Storage Co., Potomac Electric Power 3' per cent bonds, Riggs National Bank common stock, American Security & Trust stock, Lanston. Monotype, Washington Gas, Mergenthaler Linotype, Wash- ington Gas 5s, 1960, and Real Estate Mortgage & Guaranty preferred stock. Index Near Five-Year Level. Pederal Reserve Board governors an- nounce that the October rise in retail trade brought the board’s adjusted in- dex to one of the highest levels in five years. The advance was caused by the dollar volume increases in all districts, ranging from 34 per cent in the Dallas region to 11 per cent in Philadelphia end San Francisco. The Reserve Board's adjusted index stood at 90 for October compared with 88 for September and with 91 for July, which set the five-year high. In Oc- tober a year ago the index, which is based on the 1923-1925 average as 100, ‘was only 78. The unadjusted index moved even higher, reaching 99 in Octbber, the highest level in five years excepting only the annual Christmas peaks. The unadjusted index was 94 in September egainst 86 in October, 1935. Variety Store Sales Step Up. Daily average sales of variety stores for October were about 9 per cent higher than for October of last year and about 11 per cent above the same month of 1914, according to the De- partment of Commerce. Sales increased about 4 per cent from September to October, or less than the usual increase at this sea- son of the year. The seasonally ad- Justed index therefore receded to 100 for October, on the basis of the aver- age for 1929-31 as 100, from 10215 for September and 9715 for August. The aggregate value of sales for the first 10 months of the year was 8 per cent above that for the same period of 1935. D. C. Clearings Go Higher. NEW YORK, Noveember 13.—A Jate | selling burst gave the stock market a o “black Friday” aspect today and nu- merous recent leaders suffered further losses of fractions to 2 or more points, The ticker tape was late for a whils in the morning and again in the final downward push. A few specialties managed to weather the storm, al- though these were none too buoyant F 13| at the close. Transfers were around — 4| 2,500,000 shares. A little stimulation was derived hers and there from extra dividends and bright earnings statements. Merchandising and low - priced amusements were in the best demand, 5 | The steels picked up early, but could 15 | not hold. Mines, motors, utilities and several of the rails were in the skidding division. The admission of the President that a study was being made of the pose sible need of legislation to control foreign buying of American securities, | which lately have reached large pro- * | portions, helped to sober proponents 7 | of the advance. »| Shares up fractions to a point or more during the greater part of the session—although the majority yielded in the final hour—were Woolworth, | Gimbel, Lerner Stores, Allied Stores, National Department Stores, Safeway | Stores, Boeing, Transcontinental & Western Air, United States industrial Alcohol, Distillers’ Corp. - Seagrams, Cluett Peabody, Libby McNeill & Libby, Warner Bros, Paramount, American Locomotive and Baldwin preferred.
