Although no luncheon meeting is scheduled for either tomorrow or Sun- day, the solicitors themselves planned to buckle down to business and make the week end count heavily toward u‘:’e total showing at Monday's ses- sion, Radiating confidence, Coleman Jen- nings, campaign chairméan, predicted that the Chest goal will be reached ‘within the time limit set for the cam- paign. Bluntly, he told workers at luncheon that there will be abso- lutely no extension of the campaign beyond the fixed date of November 24. Faced with some reluctance on the part of certain contributors because of the increased taxes levied by Gov- ernment for the social security pro- gram, Chest leaders and workers are pointing to the wave of evidence showing increased prosperity. The flood of extra dividends, pay raises and Christmas bonuses reported from many sections of the country is be- ing definitely used to support the ar- gument that | business is better, will continue to improve, and that condi- tions here in Washington therefore Justify generous giving. ‘The needs of 65 different agencies in the Chest have been -practically tbohflL'TNymhhAhhM ~ quickly by sturdy chaps bearing on their backs large insignia of “C Men,” and carrying revolvers. The intruding strangers arrested by the “C Men” wore masks, rough clothes, and struggled against their captors as they were handled none too gently in a rush to the platform. The strangers bore on their backs the name “Hunger, Disease, Crime, and Despair.” Before them on the huge dally report board hanging on the wall were pictures of their black figures, behind “thin” prison bars. Haled Before Judge. It was all a dramatic skit, to thrill workers into realization that “C Men"” are needed in the Chest's drive this year against these four public enemies. Haled before Judge Nathan Cayton of Municipal Court, they were scath- ingly denounced for their ravages throughout the District. ““Too long you have preyed on men and women in distress. here in the District,” declared Judge Cayton, ;'Zou have not hesitated to take cruel iL” The people of Washington, he said, would be their judges, and at the end of the Community Chest campaign, he would pronounce sentences to ime How heavier bars can be thrown across the pictured prison for the public enemies on the report board by growth of the Chest contributions getting 408 pledges to the total of $400,511. This total was raised $5,000 by Mrs. Charles A. Goldsmith, vice chairman, who reported “unofficially” an extra pledge. It was this figure, which boosted the grand total of all pledges on the big board from $487,- 359.63 to $492,359.63. Talk by Tumulty. “Understand the heart beat of suf- fering,” admonished Tumulty. “Stand on some lofty hill and look down into the valley of despair, and then out of your heart will come a sympathy to respond to the needs of humanity. The most beautiful things in life are the imponderable things. * * * I feel sorry for those who live in the lonely island of selfishness.” _ Hundreds who crowded the big ball- room of the hotel listened intently as other unit chairmen made their re- John L. Recalling that more than 170,000 people contributed to the Chest last year, he declared that “the Chest, by the sanity and humanity of its pur- poses and the efficiency and integrity of its administration, has in the eight years of its existence sold itself to you and to me. It stands for your and my ition that there is no more recogni | binding obligation on this earth than that of neighbor to neighbor. It typifies your and my desire and in- sistence that that obligation shall be met. It symbolizes at one and a same 7 of their fellow men and the social structure in which they live. Any one with more than his or her share of the necessities and luxuries of life today, who shuts his eyes, and his ears, and his heart to the tragic prob- lems of those less fortunate is, as I see it, less selfish than stupid as his real self-interests are computed.” The speaker declared there are many givers in the $25 to $100 class who would double or treble their contribu- tions if they could be made to under- stand the need that exists. ‘The series of radio plays sponsored by the Chest will continue tonight over Station WMAL at 7:15, when the Players’ Club of Central Commu- nity Players will present a skit en- titled “Other People’s Money.” There will be no radio play tomorrow or Sunday, but the series will be re- petition in these radio playlets will be made the last night of the Chest Among the series of meetings spon- sored by the Governmental Unit was | pledges, $234; Frank R.
