C, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 1936. s A—17 - - “safety crews” for West Coast ships|it,” said Joseph Curran, head of the MUSIC TO FEATURE PENWOMEN'S FETE 0’Hara, Song Writer Who Copyrighted Anthem, to Be Toastmaster. Geoffrey O'Hara, American song writer, who for a short time owned the national anthem, “The Star Spangled Banner,” will come to Wash- ington to act as toastmaster for the first “celebrity breakfast” of the year, | to be held by the National League of American Penwomen at the Willard Hotel at noon Saturday. Harlan Ran- dall, local bari- tone, will sing O’Hara’s, “There _ Is No Death,” and “Do You Fear the Wind?” at the breakfest, and the Glee Club of Maryland Univer- sity will sing the O'Hara song, “Give & Man a Horse He Can Ride,” and his arrangement of “A Liftle Close | Harmony.” Doro- | thy Radde Emery, local composer, will accompany the singers. O’Hara obtained & copyright to “The | Star Spangled Banner” as a result of his observation during the World War that the American public was | singing as its national anthem a song which varied in many respects from | the original version, an old English drinking song called ‘“Anacreon in Heaven.” He had three records made of the | singing of the anthem by three en- tirely different large groups of peo- | ple. The three versions were identical, fbut they differed in as many as 32 places from the oid English song. So Mr. O’'Hara copyrighted, in his name, the national anthem as it actually is sung by Americans, putting it on paper for | the first time, in this form. Then he | publicly presented the version to the United States Government, so that the national anthem now is legally the property of the United States. Mrs. Phyllis Fergus Hoyt, national | president of the Penwomen, will pre- | side at the breakfast. The list of | guests includes Mrs. O'Hara, Olga | Moore, short-story writer; William E. Geoffrey O'Hara, | Barrett, magazine writer; Lewis Lofton | | Moneyway, president of the Arts Club | of Washington; Miss Ethel Armes, au- | thor of “Stratford Hall,” and Lee Pat- | | tison, musical authority. Mrs. Mabel | | H. Pittle is in charge of reservations. { Sis e Single Species of Rodent. | Paca is a rodent represented by only a single species in South and Central America, Schechter Family Voted For Roosevelt To Serve New Term By the Assoclated Press.
