BY THORNTON W. BURGESS. Fl! that it may mot be your fate 'o entertain res: reta too late. —Johnny Chuck. OHNNY CHUCK was out of sorts. In fact, he was decidedly upset. You see, Unc' Billy Possum had taken refuge from Flip the Terrier and Bowser the Hound in Johnny Chuck’s under- ground house. Unc’ Billy didn’t know whose house it was at the time he ran in there and he had gone no farther than just a little way inside the back entrance. However, Johnny Chuck resented even this. He didn't want anybody inside his home. Furthermore, he blamed Unc' Billy for bringing Flip the Terrier and Bowser the Hound there. Johnny had ordered Unc’ Billy out, threatening to drive him out if he didn't go of his own accord. Unc’ Billy's plea that he would simply be driven to the dogs had no effect. Johnny Chuck was so angry that for the time being he didn't care what happened to Unc’ Billy. 8o, growling and snarling, Johnny Chuck had started up his back hall leading to the back entrance to make good his threat. He expected to have a fight with Unc’ Billy. He was all prepared for it. Instead he found Unc’ Billy lying in that back hall, apparently dead. Then Johnny Chuck was sorry. He didn't know what could have happened to Unc’ Billy, but he was sorry, anyway. He went back down to his bedroom to think it over. After & while the dogs stopped barking. Johnny Chuck ventured up on his doorstep. e sat up. There were Bowser the hound and Flip the Terrier trotting back toward home. “Thank goodness!” sai Johnny Chuck to himself. “I hope they'll stay away. But with a club opening he would then have discarded a losing heart before the ace had been knocked out. - It'is also worthy of note that the slam in diamonds was an absolute laydown, even with & heart opening, since North would be able to discard & losing heart on dummy’s long spade. be pleased to answer m_readers, if a stamped (3- T pocl outline of Pour oy “.l-' Baby an’ that skirl is just alike— both full ob energetics! After a while he decided that he would go up that back hall and have another look at Unc’ Billy. You see, he didn’t know just what to do about Unc' Billy. He thought some of blocking up that back hall with sand. Then Johnny realized that there was light ‘coming down that back hall from the doorway, a lot more light than there should have been, with Unc' Billy Possum blocking up the hall. That was queer. Johnny stopped to consider it. Then he went on a bit, and suddenly he realized that there was no Unc' Billy Possum in that hall, No sir, that back hall was empty. If ever there was a surprised Wood- chuck, that one was Johnny Chuck. He kept right on until he poked his head out the back door. There was no Unc’ Billy Possum. It didn't seem possible, but it was true. Johnny sim- ply stared this way and that. What could have happened? Johnny didn't know. You see, Johnny Chuck was not well acquainted with Unc’ Billy Possum and he knew nothing what- ever about Unc’ Billy's famous trick of pretending to be dead. Meanwhile Unc’' Billy Possum was making his way back to the Green Forest. He was skulking along, taking advantage of every bit of cover that he could find. Presently he reached the Green Forest. Then Unc' Billy drew a long sigh of relief. He felt safe enough now. Presently, as he made his way toward his own home, whom should | he meet but Mrs. Possum, and with |her & lot of little Possums. ATURE lovers insist upon the truth. They prefer calling the famous dweller of the sands of the Southwest the horned lisard, in spite of the fact most people call it “toad.” As you know, & true toad is an amphibian. This means that its youthful days are spent in the water, and that once each year the trek is made to some watering place at mating time, and many eggs are left there in strings to hatch. But the spiny dweller of the desert is a reptile, and most of the species give birth w their young, who take care of them- selves when a few hours old. There is not the slightest resemblance between the toad baby and the offspring of the lizard. However, few of nature’s children receive their common name without s good reason. So we shall see why the lisard has been dubbed a “toad,” and that will be that. Both creatures are ardent insect consumers. If you want to witness & look of anticipation and esgerness in the eye of either, dangle a portly insect or grub in front of it, and see with what alacrity it encompasses it. Our friend of the garden, Captain Warts, seems to enjoy a wider range of insect tidbits. Possibly because, where he locates his Summer home, there is an abundance, whereas, the desert walf is overjoyed when he sights & busy ant hill. A more thorough job of clean- ing up & village cannot be imagined. The marvel is that the “toad” can hold so many, and seem to smack his lips with zest to the very last ant. Horned lizards are sun worshipers The moment the sun’s heat diminishes ever so0 slightly under hot sand blan- kets snuggles the whole tribe, and they will not show up again until the sun is blazing hot. So if some friend brings you & “horned toad” from Texas, Mexico or California, remember it of sand, and can get under the hot grains in quick order. They use the head and sharp spiny side equipment shovel style. ‘When captured, the average “toad” goes limp in your hands. Eyes are closed, death seems imminent. Some swell up, others make themselves so thin that you wonder where all the interior apparatus has disappeared. One species even sends out tiny jets of blood from the corner of an eye! As a pet, & “horned toad” in perfect health will see to it that you have few dull moments. Coprright, 1036.)
