SIX COMPOSERS SIGNED BY C. B. . Group Is Commissioned to Create Music Exclusively for Radio. OLUMBIA revealed today it has commissioned six distin- guished American composers to write music for radio ex- clusively. The jobs were given to Aaron Copland, Louis Gruenberg, Howard Hanson, Roy Harris, Walter Piston and William Grant Still. Deems Taylor, Columbia's new con- sultant on music, who announced the appointments, explained that the commissioned works may be in any form, and that the only restriction placed on the composers is that the time limits of their works be suitable to broadcasting. This means the com- posers may write a symphony, a can- tata or an opera if it does not exceed 40 minutes in length. “We thought at first of holding a contest,” Taylor sald, “but we finally decided to commission certain com- posers outright. We did this for two reasons: First, because it is difficult to induce talented and successful men to take part in a contest in which they run the risk of having nothing for their pains; second, because we feel that the reputations and past achievements of the men we have selected are a guarantee that we shall be able to offer the public six works that we can be proud of having spon- sored.” The composers were chosen by a committee of the Columbia program department with Taylor as adviser. RANK LA FALCE of Warner Bros.” Theaters sends word that “Red” Nichols and his famous “Pennies” of radio fame will come to Washington Friday for a week's engagement at the Earle Theater. Nichols and his band are veterans of the air, having started broadcasting in 1926. OST CARDS from Gerald C. Gross announce plans for the October meeting of the Washington section of the Institute of Radio Engineers to be held Monday at 8 pm. in the audi- torium of the Potomac Electric Power Co. building at Tenth and E streets. James J. Lamb, technical editor of QST, official publication of the Amer- ican Radio Relay League, will discuss some recent improvements in amateur communication receivers, N B. C. has completed arrange- * ments to broadcast the opening of the fourteenth annual season of the San Francisco Opera Company October 30. The production will be Halevey's “La Juive,” with Giovanni Martinelli, Elisabeth Rethberg and Ezio Pinza in the leading roles. MUEKCAL works by Frederick the Great will be featured during the first broadcast of the season by the American School of the Alr, which re- turns to Columbia next Tuesday.
