LONGER EXCHANGE SESSION IS TALKED Discussed by Number of Member Firms. By the Associated Pross. NEW YORK, October 6.—Extension of trading in the New York Stock Ex- change to 4 pm. from the present limit of 3 p.m, is the subject of “con- versations” by & number of firms doing a substantial securities business on the Pacific Coast, it was learned today. These members feel the wide dis- parity of time between New York and the coast militates against obtaining the amount of business which might normally be expected from the Far West. They point out that when the New York exchanges open for business it is 6 a.m. in California, Oregon and ‘Washington, an hour which they be- lieve is much too early to interest ive customers. At closing time in New York it is the trading time here, thereby doubling the “good trading hours” on the Pa- cific Coast. Stock exchange officials have not been presented with any request to consider the change and disclaim any knowledge of the firms involved in the move. They “understand,” however, that some “talk to that effect has been going the rounds.” SAN FRANCISCO, October 6 (#).— Pacific Coast brokers expressed doubt today whether the New York Stock Exchange could gain enough added coast business to make it pay to re- main open another hour. Should the move be tried, it would aid speculative traders, some said, and would give some houses more business with little if any additional cost. Investment trading, it was believed, would be little affected. $26,000,000 Spent By Chevrolet For Factory Changes By the Asscclated Press. DETROIT, October 6.—M. E. Tendency to Defer Orders Until After Election Cited by Review. Srecial Dispateh to The Star. NEW YORK, October 6.—Despite the tendency for business to swing up- ward, the political situation is making itself felt enough to interrupt a steady improvement in machinery manuface ture, says American Machinist. “Since the July peak there has de- veloped an inclination to defer com- mitments until after election day and to make plans for 1937 expenditures. “This does not mean that orders are drying up, for all sections of the coun- try are demanding new machinery, and in some there has been no reces~ sion. Industry has a long way to go before deferred replacement of equipe mdnt A: overcome and, with March an ril deliveries curren uoted, forehanded executives ":ly l:narlnl politics in order to take advantage of the hesitancy of less courageous buy- ers. Foreign demand continues strong and is well spread as to locality and type of machinery. American made machines are finding brand-new mar- kets in various parts of the world. “New England notes a temporary decrease in volume, although some im- provement has come in the past two weeks. The same condition prevails around New York, with every indica- tion that politics is the cause. Pitts- burgh is cheered by the prospect of friendlier labor conditions. “Although many concerns have ex- hausted this year's appropriations for | machinery, they are planning large expenditures for next year, particularly if Landon is elected. This expression is & familiar one to salesmen seeking orders and, if it means anything, manufacturers will be swamped in the event of a Republican victory. “Cincinnati estimates the recession at about 10 per cent of August levels, but looks ahead to a satisfactory last quarter. Labor conditions have im- proved. September business in Cleve- land bettered the year's average; orders were well distributed geographi- cally and by industry. Prospects for the fourth quarter are excellent. “Toledo feels the falling off, but in- quiries are active and orders continue to come in. Things are quiet in De- troit during the change-over period, and not much is expected in equipment | demand until production is resumed.” 1886 V || sotn xear TYPEWRITER STANDS s*ro CKETT ° Office are interested in us is,«-duu for Business Recerds and Equipment 1936 of Progress i lMII.I.S BI.Dg.
