SCHOOL BUILDING DELAY PROTESTED Forest Hills Citizens Will Take Plea to District Authorities. The Forest Hills Citizens’ Asso- elation at its first meeting of the r2ason last night unanimously ap- proved a resolution authorizing Presi- dent L. A. Carruthers to appoint a special committee to investigate the delay in beginning construction of the west wing to the Alice Deal School. The group met in the Ben Murch School. Mrs, Wilbur La Roe, jr, chairman of the Committee on Schools, re- ported that no definite answer could be obtained from Nathan C. Wyeth, District architect, as to when con- struction will begin on the building. Mrs. La Roe said $169,000 was allo- cated for this purpose July 1. Mrs. Leslie B. Wright, secretary, said the delay left 300 students with- out school housing provisions and they have to be absorbed by the other already greatly overcrowded schools ©f the area. A special committee, of which Mrs. La Roe is chairman, is to interview District authorities and to seek to expedite beginning work on the building. The resolution added that if addi- tional revenue is needed for the up- keep of streets ‘it should come from an increase in the gasoline tax. The annual dinner of the association will be postponed until January, it was decided. GEORGETOWN GROUP BACKS D. C. VOTE Bill Allowing Commissioners to Select Delegate to Congress Is Opposed. The Georgetown Progressive Citi- zens’ Association meeting last night unanimously adopted a resolution re- iterating its stand on national rep- resentation for the District. The resolution, introduced by Etta L. Taggart, further voiced the asso- ciation's opposition to the Senate bill which provides for the election by the Commissioners of one of their members to serve during Congress as a delegate to the House of Representa- tives and Senate with the right to participate in debate but not to vote. This bill, the resolution stated, tends to hinder the cause rather than grant to the citizens of the District rights they deserve. The resolution commended the newspapers for their co-operation on this subject. Mrs. Mabel J. Fry, president, urged co-operation of the members in plac- ing & float or unit in the forthcom- ing Halloween parade, emphasizing THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, TUESDAY, ; OCTOBER 6, 1936.
