WHOLESALE INDEX GAINS SLIGHTLY Fertilizer Association Finds Average at 80.1, Against 80 Week Ago. ‘The weekly wholesale commodity price index compiled by the National Fertilizer Association registered a small increase in the week ended Oc- tober 3, moving up to 80.1 per cent of the 1926-1928 average from 80.0 in the preceding week. A month ago the index was 79.7 and & year ago 784. The highest point reached by the index this year and also in the price recovery which began in the Spring of 1933 was 80.5 in the week of September 19. Fluctuations in the all-commodity index in the past have usually been due to price movement of farm prod= | ucts and foods. The rise last week, | however, was caused by rising prices | for industrial commodities, with the farm product and food indexes dee clining. The index for all commodities except farm products and foods advanced last week to a new high point for the re- covery period, reflecting increases in seven group indexes. ‘The trend of footstuff prices was downward during the week with 11 | items included in this group declining | and eight advancing; the net result was a small decline in the group index. Declining prices for all grains, which | more than offset the effect of higher quotations for cotton, eggs. cattle and hogs, were responsible for the drop in the index of farm product prices. A seasonal advance in anthracite coal prices combined with & slight rise in fuel oil was responsible for the up- turn in the fuel price index. The metal and chemical and drug indexes advanced to new high points for the recovery period and the build- ing material index was at approxi- mately the highest point. A decline in the discount on potash salts combined with a dollar-a-ton advance on nitrate of soda resulted in a moderate advance in the index of | fertilizer material prices, taking it to the highest point reached since 1932 Advances were registered last week by 39 price series included in the index and declines by 26; in the precedin week there were 23 advances and 29 | declines; in the second preceding wek | there were 40 advances and 18 decline..
