Ceremonies were held in London by the British English Speaking Union when the bust was completed. MIAMI BUILDING GAINS $20,000,000 Mark in Construction Passed Last Week. MIAMI, Fla, September 19 (#)— The $20,000,000 mark in construction in the Miami prea this year Wwas passed during the week. Building officials said this amount was nearly 100 per cent greater than the volume of construction at this time last year and some 25 per cent more than the $16,000,000 total for the area during the whole of 1935, when a new high was set for thc f previous 10 years. Dr. Edwin R. Hodge, 76, retired major of the Army Medical Corps, who rendered valuable service to the Army Medical Museum here in making a study of wounds made by weapons in the Philippine Insurrection and recomm ending forms of treat- ment, died Fri- day at a vet- erans’ hospital in New York. While engaged in this work he was associated with Dr. Walter Reed. A former resi- dent of this city, Dr. Hodge for many years was & member of the United States Pharmacopoeia Com- mittee here and at one time lec- tured an anatomy at the Army War College. During and after the World War he was a major on duty at the Medical Supply Base, Brooklyn, N. Y., where his work included making anal- yses of medical supplies used by the Army. He had been sent to the Philippines during the insurrection there while making his study of wounds for the Medical Museum. Dr. Hodge was & brother of Miss Emlyn M. Hodge and Miss Evelyn B. Hodge, both of 2012 Wyoming avenue, engaged in the real estate business here, A native of Plymouth, England, Dr. Hodge was graduated in medicine at Johns Hopkins University and later took up post-graduate work at Yale. He was a member of the Army Medical Association and the New York Arts Club. leaves two sons, Richard G. Hodge of New York, connected with a manu- facturing firm of that city and Chi- cago, and Sewell W. Hodge, treasurer of the Provident Life & Trust Co. of Philadelphia, and one grandchild. A formal opening to the public of | ters, recently established at 1500 Rhode Island avenue northwest, is | being arranged for Tuesday night, it was announced yesterday by John B. Colpoys, chairman of the Democratic State Central Committee for the Dis- trict. ‘The local Democratic committee fplans to have rallies regularly on Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights, after the formal opening un- til the campaign ends, at the Rhode Island avenue headquarters, Colpoys said. The speaker for the Tuesday night meeting will be announced later. In addition to these rallies there will be other meetings from time to time of various State Democratic clubs that have been formed here for the purpose of helping to get out ab- sentee votes. Colpoys pointed out that the Rhode Island avenue head- quarters contains 40 rooms, many of which are being assigned to Demo- cratic State clubs as meeting places. GRUENING HEADS CHILD WELFARE UNIT Mrs. Elwood Street Named Vice Chairman of Institutional Work. Mrs. Ernest Gruening is the new chairman of the Child Welfare Com- mittee of the Council of Social Agen- cles, it was announced yesterday. Mrs. Elwood Street was named vice chair- man of the committee in charge of institutional work. Mrs. Gruening has been active in child welfare work both in Washing- ton and in Maine in connection with her work in the League of Women Voters. She is the wife of Dr. Ernest Gruening, director of Islands and Ter-~ ritories in the Interior Department. ‘The committee is planning an elabo- rate program for the care of children in the District. It will study reports on facilities for the detention of juve- nile delinquents, the status of normal children In institutions, and press legislation for child welfare. J. A.
