REPAIR WORK ITEM IN BUILDING BOOM Modernization Also Becoming In- creasingly Important Factor, Report Shows. Home repairs and modernization, neglected during the depression, are becoming increasingly important fac- tors in the revival of private building operations throughout the country, a survey among distributors of building supplies in 42 States indicated today. An average of 72 per cent of total sales of materials for private building duning the first quarter of this year was for repairs and modernization, as against 28 per cent for new construc- tion, according to reports by distribu- tors in 300 cities and towns to the manufacturers of building products. who conducted the survey. Kanrsas distributors reported the highest proportion of sales, an aver- age of 90 per cent for residential construction, while cealers reported the highest propor- tion, 66 per cent for non-residential construction. The most optimistic predictions for the immediate future of private build- ing operations came from Alabama. | Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee, where dealers predicted an average in- crease of 29 per cent in total sales of building materials in 1936 over 1935 While dealers in some individual com- munities predicted either no change or |a falling off in private building ac- tivity, there was no State in which the distributors as a whole did not an-| ticipate some improvement. Colonial Paint Styles. In early Colonial houses white paint was the only color used for woodwork, except for the real mahogany used in handrails and, occasionally, stair bal- usters. The stair was always espe- cially beautiful in its mahogany and white paint. The floors of wide boards were painted red or squash color. North Dakota | . The kitchens in new houses are nearly all things of beauty and the last word in convenience these days. If you happen to be like so many of us who enjoy cryising about to look at new houses, owing gfull well that you will have to retgrn to your old diggings and like them for an indefi- nite time to coms, it is probably a great letdown when you have to troop out into your old kitchen. You can do & wonderful making yourself happy again if you go ahead and fix up the old place with & new stove, either gas or elec- tric, & shiny new sink complete with either monel metal or porcelain drain boards, and a mechanical refrigerator if you haven't already bought one. For those of you who want to put in the last word in new kitchen equip- ment, don't miss seeing the new unit kitchens which have recently been an- nounced. They are gorgeous things and would make the kitchens of many houses by far the best-looking rooms in the structures, They are styled in the modern manner and may be in- stalled as a package device or pur- chased on the piece-by-piece plan. Including an electric range, electric dishwasher, kitchen cabinets and elec- tric refrigerator in the line, these kitchen units are the perfect answer to a héusewife's prayer for work-sav- ing equipment. Due to their unit construction, which ‘enables the va- rious pieces to be arranged in any desired way, you are sure of getting the maximum amount of efficiency from the layout which can be ar- ranged in your particular ktichen. The kitchen units are of all-steel construction, with not a single piece of wood used anywhere, and the cabi- nets feature movable shelves which aren’t often seen in that type of con- struction. The fact that the various items are really integral units make it extremely easy to install them, and also makes it possible to put the various pieces when and where you want to. Of course they have built-in light- ing equipment which will prove to be a boon to kitchen enthusiasts on dark, rainy days when you can't see the cook book, and the cheery illum- ination brightens up the whole place. The various work surfaces, as they call the drain boards and other con- venient places, are all of black porc lain on steel so that they are resilient. In other words, they can't be cracked | by the blow of dropping something pretty heavy on them, and are nice and light so that they can be installed | with a minimum of labor.
