A—10 xxx FINANCIAL. THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, FRIDAY, JULY 3, 1936. __FINANCIAL. TRANSACTIONS ON THE NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE CAPITAL DEPOSITS DECLINE SLIGHTLY Controller’s Call Reveals $3,574,661 Recession From March Peak. BY EDWARD C. STONE. Controller of the Currency J. F. T. ©'Connor issued a call today for the condition of all banks in the Distisct of Columbia and all national banks in the country as of June 30, 1936. the end of the Government's fiscal year. Following announcement of the call, it was learned by The Star that the 22 Washington banks had aggregate deposits on June 30 of approximately $306.432.644.78, compared with a total of $31€,197.305.89 or the call three months ago, dated March 4 | Today's call reveals a slight drop | in deposits of $3,574,661.11 from the high peak reached in Maréh. Up to| the middle of June the banks in| Washington had more deposits than on the date of the March call, bank- ers said today. According to bank officials, the main reason for the small | slump in the totals is due to the fact that many people take money out of | the banks in order to avoid the per- sonal tax due July 1. Temporarily, they place their money in non-tax- able securities, officials say. While the figures are subject to elight changes, Washington banks re- ported the following deposits as of | June 30, 1936: Deposits on June 30, 192 American Sec. & Trust $47, Anacostia Bank _______ 1.732,736.75 | Bank of Com. & Savings 2.933.374.22 City Bank 6.832,705.27 Columbia National __ 4,832.896.36 East Washington Sav'gs 1,010.607.31 Hamilton National . 21,312,384.63 | Industriai Bank . 416,045.78 Liberty National . 6,500.351.80 Lincoln National. 9.873.153.62 McLachlen Bank- 4.501.218.72 Munsey Trust Co.. 5.365,334.44 Morris Plan Bank 1,580,209.24 National B’k of Wash. 9.297,605.48 National Capital 3.003.808.46 National Metropolitan. 25,222,966.22 Nat. Simul- taneously, the Federal Reserve Board today ked for the condition state- ments of all member banks as of | June 30, while the Federal Dzpesit Insurance Corp. requested all State non-member insured banks to report | their condition at the close of busi- ness on Tuesday, June 30. | Today's reports indicate that 15 banks in the Capital had increases in | deposits over the March call totals | while seven had lower fisures. All | the individual decreasez were com- paratively small. The gains by the other banks were mod not quite enough to bring total deposits in the city into new high ground. New York banks have been report- | ing considerably better earninzs in | the past three months and the whole | first half vear. Banks here say this 1s also true in Washington. Business Activity Continues, “Business activity continues to ex- pand with little regard for the tradi- | tional uncertainties of an election | sear. In short, recovery seems to be | assuming more and more the aspects of its many predecessors which were motivated by the restoration of con- fidence,” declares the American Ba ers’ Association monthly an: business conditions, out today. review ads “Amid the hubbub in Wa Cleveland and Philadelph to its knittis lines of activity recorded gains that were contra-seasonal: in others the diminution that usually signals the epproach of Summer was less than normal. On the whole it was a sat- isfactory month; the momentum pre- f viously acquired was sufficient to overcome any hesitancy which might otherwise have been manifest. “The immediate effects of the bonus | payment were less spectacular than had been anticipated, for in mam'} communities there was no great rush | to cash the bonds. No doubt a lib- eral proportion of the money will find its way into retail trade before the | Summer is over. “Demand for goods of the semi- permanent type also has been brisk and tends to increase. Automobile production slows up as the trade pre- | pares for the new model season, yet a | 5,000,000-unit year still seems prob-' able. Fair Crop Returns Seen. “Crop prospects are excellent in many parts of the country. Drought has threatened to be a disturbing factor in the Northwest, but the price outlook, at his point, seems promis- ing. There has been enough doubt | about the position of cotton to lift | prices appreciably in response to a | strong demand at home and abroad; even with a fairly short crop, which in unlikelv. a fair return is promised to Southern farmers. “Retail trade generally is 10 to 28 per cent above a year ago, having reached the best level since early in the depression. June reports suggest- ed a further increase. This gain, it appears, represents a rise in the ac- tual turnover of goods, as there has been practically no increase in prices for consumptiongoods over a year ago.‘ “How completely the banks have cleared away the wreckage of boom and depression years appears graph- ically in the fact that institutions in the Federal deposit insurance system had net additions to profits last year of $207,000,000 as compared with a net loss of $339,000,000 in 1934. How- ever, this result was obtained more by | stopping losses than by increasing | gains and is more an evidence of com. pleted liquidation than of increased | earning power.” business i Several | NEW YORK SUGAR.
