Srectal Dispatch to The Star NEW YORK, June 29.—With its usual close correlation to general busi- ness trends, advertising during the first five months of 1938 continued to register substantial gains over a year ago. From an analysis of na- tional and retail advertising budgets, which are generally based on a per- centage of the sales figure, it is ap- parent that these incréased expendi- tures are not stepped-up appropria- ticns intended to stimulate trade arti- ficially, but rather the natural result of rising sales, according to the Stand- ard Statistics Co. of New York. Newspaper space sales, alded by a substantial increase in retail adver- tising during the past few months, have scored a material increase. Lineage for the first five months was 7.5 per cent greater than in 1935. Both magazine and newspaper ad- vertising lineage, at their seasonal peak in April, were the largest since 1931. Despite these gains, however, both were still about 31 per cent below their 1929 peaks, and, on a dollar basis, slightly further below record levels. For the second half of the y; the outlook for almost all types "of advertising remains highly promising. Newspapers in recent weeks have re- ceived heavy retail and automobile promotions to attract the veteran's bonus money. These campaigns should continue through July and a part| Lof August, bolstering lineage during these normally dull periods and ma- terially aiding earnings. CHICAGO, June 29 (#).—Retail newspaper advertising for the week | ending June 20 “broke all records for gains over the preceding year,” the magazine Advertising Age said today. The lineage outdistanced the corre- sponding period in 1935 by 34863813, the magazine's survey of 66 major | cities showed, or 22.9 per cent. The “efforts of merchants to secure their share of the bonus money” was responsible, the magazine said, for the bulk of the increase. It credited the rest to “better business conditions.” Washington Produce Range of prices in stores BUTTER—! | gathered from wholesale dealers (prices (0 nearby shippers based on Philadeiphia and rk prices): One-pound prints. car 3: 1-pound prints. carton -pound prints. carton (92 pound prints, carton (90 7 tubs (07 score), tubs (80 1. 15a17: lamb, N: fresh ham. ton (92 s (90 score) score). score). 1} ME mpound. 10'za | Prices paid xnlnpenvnu f.0b. Sales Volumes of Paper Box Firms Srecial Dispatch to The Star NEW YORK, June 29.—In keeping with the increased usage of paper boxes and containers, and the wider distribution of consumer merchandise, wholesale volume in units ranged from 10 to 20 per cent larger for the first five months of the current year than for the corresponding 1935 period, ac- cording to a survey by Dun & Brad- street, Inc. “Keen competition and the low price level, however, left the dollar volume about where it was a year ago. Em- ploying more help and working longer hours, manufacturers in the corru- gated and folding box divisions made the best showing. For set-up boxes, the gain in output was smaller. “Unit production of paper boxes last Fall was the largest in three years, and for the first five months of 1936 went 10 to 12 per cent ahead of the 1935 total. This was reflected in the operations of paperboard manufac- turers, which in October, 1935, reached 80 per cent of capacity, or 27.0 per cent higher than the 1934 compara- tive. The curtailment that followed ve monthly increases brought the op- erating rate for April, 1936, to 72 per cent of capacity, a rise of 10.8 per cent from the April, 1935, rate at 65. not seem to be in a healthy condition. Competition in an already overcrowd- ed field /has been intensified by the entrance of new manufacturers, and r | the spread of price-cutting has blocked all attempts to raise the level of quo- tations. The poor financial statements submitted by most manufacturers ex- plain the rising trend of failures for the first time since 1932.” FEDERAL LAND BANKS NEW YORK. 20 P.—Federal Land Bank Bonds (Quotations as of 2 o'clock.)
