The Foening Star SLVER STAR HOVE ENTERING SECON W EEK TOMORRON Large Crowd Expected to See Model Structure in Westerleigh. HOURS OF EXHIBITION ARE 10 A.M. TO 9 P.M. Eighteenth Century Living Room Feature—Dining Room Furni- ture Is Chippendale ‘The stately Georgian Colonial struc- ture at 48490 Upton street, Westerleigh, that is the eighth Silver Star home of 1935, will begin its second week of pub- lic exhibition tomorrow under spon- sorship of The Star. Arrangements have been made to| take care of large crowds of visitors st the home tomorrow, 8s inclement weather for the opening last Sunday kept away hundreds of persons. The house will be open from 10 a.m. until 9 pm. It will be available for inspec- tion, completely furnished, for 30 days. The home may be reached by driv- ing out MasSachusetts avenue across Wisconsin and Nebraska avenues to Upton street, a short distance beyond Nebraska avenue, thence left on Upton slightly more than two blocks to the house. It is located on the corner of Twenty-ninth street. “The firm of W. C. and A. N. Miller, well known for its work in developing Spring Valley and Wesley Heights, built the new Star home. It is sit- usted in the new Miller subdivision of Westerleigh, which was started in 1934, and is the first sponsored dwell- ing in the section. The home has been furnished by Mayer & Co. and decorated by the Wesley Heights Shops. Indorsed by Committe. Members of the Silver Star Homes Committee, experts in various fields of home building, planning and design, gave unanimous indorsement to the Upton street house after inspecting the structure from cellar to attic. This committee selects the homes they con- sider worthy to receive the Silver Star Award. It is headed by James S. Taylor, of the Federal Housing Admin- istration. Other members are: John Nolen, jr., city planner of the National Capital Park and Planning Commis- sion; F. Eliot Middleton, president of the Washington Real Estate Board; Irwin S. Porter, architect, and imme- diate past president of the Washing- ton Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and Edwin X. Rosen- garten, builder, and member of the firm of Davis, Wick & Rosengarten. The living room, spacious and stretching across an entire side of the house, is furnished in charming eight- eenth century style. The rug is rose- henna, and the background of the room is an off-white paper, simulating a painted wall. The curtains are of sheer marquisette, ruffied and tied back. For contrast, the over-curtains are of deep blue chintz with the off- white note brought out in the flower motif and a warm amber that is picked up in the plain carpet. Fur- niture coverings repeat the colors of the curtains. This room is large and is not erowded by a grand piano wich occu- ples one corner. Other principal pleces in the room include a Duncan Phyfe sofa done in a blue damask. a Chippendale armchair in effective figured material in harmonious' color- ina. an open armchair in mahogany and upholstered in an attractive Fust color, Thé livableness of the room is tor floor lamp, litt-top table, Freder- icksburg chair, and a pillow back arm- chair. Fioral Design in Paper. In the dining room a new note is struck by departing from the usual scenic paper and substitution of a delicate-red all-over floral spray on a white background. The curtains are & copy of an old Colonial document in the same red as the pattern of the | — paper on an off-white glazed chintz. (See HOME, Page 4.) New All-Brick Homes Built by Monroe Warren F. H.
