THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C., SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 1935. FINANCIAL. A—14 ¥ FINANCIAL. SECURITIES NEAR 35% 19% S 173 1% 20% 20 9% 9 Many Bonds and Stocks Have Climbed Steadily in D. C. Trading. BY EDWARD C. STONE. Both bonds and stocks listed on the Washington Stock Exchange are wind- ing up the year around the highest quotations in the last 11 months. Some are at their peaks. Anaeostia & Potomac River R. R. first 55 have advanced from a Jow of 78 to 94 and are now sell- ing around 91. Georgetown Gas Light first 5s are now quoted at 11215, the high for the year; Po- tomac Electric Power issues are strong, while ‘Washington Rail- way & Electric 4s recently reached 106. ‘Washington Gas Light first 5s have also made a name for themselves so far in 1935. They are selling at 118, making them the highest priced bond on the list. City & Suburban Railroad first 5s have also done extra well, hav- ing advanced from 783% to 90. The | Jargest volume of trading has been in | Capital Traction 5s, which sold at! one time during the year at 90 and are now changing hands around 25 and 96. In the stock division, Washington Railway & Electric preferred has just | made a new top for the year, Wash- | fngton Gas has moved up about 4| points in 1935, while both Potomac | Electric Power preferred stocks are | selling more than 12 points above par. Norfolk & Washington Steamboat stock has also added strength dunnzi the year. Capital Transit, however, | has moved against the trend in other | ssues, dropping to 15 in recent trad- | ing. | Bank stocks have been more ncme‘ during the last few weeks and have held to strong prices. Other stocks, such as Woodward & Lothrop com- mon, have been especially strong, this gssue having moved from 28 to 40. | Lanston Monotype has climbed from 48 to 65. Peoples Drug preferred has not been active but has gained 4 points since the first of the year. It yields 8.80 per cent. The highest yield on sny local stock, Carpel Corp., is 7.30 per cent, with the last sale at 217s. And while quotations have been mov- Sng upward, volume has also been | expanding, keeping exchange officials n an optimistic mood. Law Optimistic on Banking. Francis M. Law, former president of the A. B. A, and & personal friend of many Washington bankers, said $he other day that he does not fear litical control of banks under the nking act of 1935. He explained: “Just a few months ago many thoughtful business men sincerely feared that our banking system was pbout to pass under political control. ,§ was in Washington during a good ' part of the time in which the discus- sions on the banking bill were in ess and 1 was impressed with the fairness that was exhibited on all sides. The bill itself represents pompromise and concessions. “T believe that independent banking & more firmly entrenched than at any time during this generation. The wadical changes which were feared did not remain in the law. The foun- gations of our banking system remain inshaken and unchanged. [ “The banks are finding it hard m‘ sreate sufficient earnings to pay even modest dividends, but they are in sounder, stronger and more liquid eondition than they have been per- haps ever before. It may be said with sssurance that commerce. agricul- $ure and industry have available ade- guate banking facilities.” Loan Interest Paid Rapidly. The fact that farmers had paid ®ver 84 per cent of all matured in- Serest installments on ‘Land Bank eommisisoner’s loans at the end of October reflects continued improve- ment in agricultural conditions, ac- eording to W. I Myers, Farm Credit Administration governor. The interest maturities on over $765,000000 of commissioner’s first #nd second morigage loans made since May 1, 1933, amounted to $35,300,000 Bo the end of October this year, of Wwhich over $29,700,000 was collected Bnd $5,600,000 was unpaid. Some of $he loans were made recently and | Bave had no maturities so far. “Improvement in collections fol- fowed closely the opening of the mar- | Eeting season in most sections,” Mr. Myers stated. “The best all-around $mprovement so far has occurred in &he Louisville district, including Ohio, findiana, Tennessee and Kentucky, wrhere crop conditions have been gen- wrally good and live stock prices fa- worable. Collections in the district in- sreased from 86.2 per cent of maturi- Bies a¢ the end of October, 1934, to 94 per cent at the end of September this ear to 95.3 at the end of October. o Wealth Moves Southward. A definite shift of the national wealth to the Southern and Pacific Btates from the New England, North ‘Atlantic and North Central States over the last 40 years is indicated by Rob- ert R. Doane in the Annalist. This trend is brought out by a series of tables showing the total wealth of the country by States, dec- ades and categories of wealth, together with the percentage distribution in the various classifications. Among the States that account for an increasing percentage of the na- tional wealth are Connecticut, New Jersey, Michigan, South Dakota, Vir- ginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas, Zdaho, Wyoming, Arizona, Washing- #on and California. The other States either merely maintained their pro- portionate share or else suffered actual percentage losses. Heard in Financial District. Members of the American Security Club, made up of employes of the trust company, are holding an oyster | roast in Rock Creek Park near the reservoir this afternoon. About 300 were expected, several officers and directors having accepted invitations. The club president is K. C. Moore. A Baltimore syndicate composed of Stein Bros. & Boyce, Mackubin ZLegge & Co., Baker Watts & Co. and Mercantile Trust Co. has been awarded 475,000 Dorchester County, Md., school bonds on their bid of 100.35 for 2%s. A bid of 102.119 for 3s was submitted by W..W. Lanahan & Co. Thomas *H. McInnerney, president of National Dairy Products Corp.. which has two Washington units, says the company’s sales and net earnings in the first nine months of this year showed an improvement over the 1934 period. 914 25% 173 9 5% 37 4% % 5% 47y 418, 1495 168 32% Francis M. BY VICTOR EUBANK, Associated Press Financial Writer. NEW YORK, November 23.—The stock market staged a vigorous rally today in the wake of Washington news that brought a rush of buyers in all sections of the list. Gains of 1 to 5 points were Te- corded, with the ticker tape dropping behind floor -transactions in the first hour and again in the last few min- utes. The close was strong. Trans- fers approximated 1,850,000 shares. The principal aid for yesterday's tottering list was seen in the over= night statement of Chairman Eccles of the Federal Reserve Board that it was not posible to interfere, officially, even if it was desired, with the rise in stocks because the advance has not been based on the use of credit Attention was centered on the Eccleg expression that he thought “there iy an element of safety and of strength in the fact that security purchases are being financed out of cash without increased use of bank credit.” Higher prices ruled at the start. The volume dwindled later, then the buy- ing demand became brisk just before the close. Specialties gave the best performance. Among the conspicuous advances were those of Evans Products, Ameri- Bethlehem, Auburn, Western Union, Case, Westinghouse, American Can, Johns-Manville, Sears Roebuck, Southern Railway, Santa Fe, Union Pacific, Southern Pacific, U. 8. Smelting and Kennecott. There was {a run on Studebaker for a gain of about a point. Other low-priced issues experienced a heavy turnover. A number of new highs for the past four years were recorded. While the pronouncement of tha Federal Reserve Authority was pleas- ing to bullish forces, it was recalled | that brokerage commentators for some | time have been stressing the fact that margin operations in stocks were at a minimum and that cash buying, both here and from abroad, wa. greater than at any time in recen: years. The French financial crisis was still being watched closely in the boaru rooms and there were many guesses as to what could happen to stock if that country falls off the gold standard or devalues the franc, U. 5.
