'B—12 MUSICAL REACTION MADE INTO DRAMA Rachmaninoff’s “Isle of The Dead” Is Theme of Broadcast. DRAMA written to express its author's reaction to one of the world's greatest musical masterworks will be presented by the National Broadcasting Co. in the “Five Hours Back” program Sat- urday, November 30. “Five Hours Back” is a weekly N. B. C. feature shortwaved to England for rebroad- cast by the B. B. C. A regular attendant at Frank Black’s symphonic broadcasts, Ray- mend Scudder, N. B. C. continuity writer, conceived the idea of writing & drama based entirely on some great musical work, and one in which the | dialogue would follow accurately the | melodic flow and musical accent of | such a composition. He talked over his idea with Dr. | Black, who suggested Rachmaninofl’s “Isle of the Dead” had interesting pos- sibilities for such treatment. He con- ducted that work on a recent broad- cast, and its awesome poignancy fitted | | Scudder’s idea perfectly. After rapidly sketching out his idea of the drama in the studio, Scudder purchased a complete recording of Rachmaninoff’s tone poem. He played and replayed this album of records until he had familiarized himself with every measure of the score. Then he began writing, cueing word to beat and phrase to melody. * ok % ok THE vocational guidance periods be- gun last year as an experiment by the “American School of the Air” have been made a permanent feature of this year's plan of broadcast instruc- tion in response to popular demand. They are presented over the coast-to- coast Columbia network each Friday | from 2:30 to 3 p.m, in conjunction with the Vocational Guidance Com- mittee of the National Advisory Coun- | cil on Radio in Education. Weekly broadcasts are planned to help students decide what occupa- tions to choose. However, the primary purpose of the course is not to induce pupils to choose their occupations | definitively, but to open their eyes| to the many kinds of things there are | to do and to engender an apprecia- tion of occupational life. * x % % DENIS K. LANE will discuss “The Sign of the Cross” during the Knights of Columbus Radio Guild! program on WOL tomorrow at 10:30 | am. The following week Alfred A. McGarraghy will speak on “Thanks- giving.” * % % % J B. C. will introduce a new series * of concerts by the augmented Navy Symphony Orchestra November | 27. Composers will be invited to con- | duct their own works. DAILY SHO! MR. CINDERELLA By Frances Kloock. 'HE door of the dark and hand- gome young man’s room in a house on Columbia road was open as usual and the steady rhythm of his typewriter came to Jeanne, as she trod past on the way to her own little apartment. Of course, it was obvious to Jeanne that he was a writer. But more fascinating was the revelation of Mrs. Murdoch, the land- lady of the earnest young writer. “All that stuff,” the landlady re- vealed, “of love and romance that you listen to on the radio—he writes that.” “Yes, I've listened to a great many | of his stories on the air, Jeanne ack- nowledged. “Romance? Sure, what does he | know about it?” Mrs. Murdoch went | on, shaking her head sadly. “He's| in that room all day long, banging at | that machine. He never does any- | thing but work. Some days he doesn’t | even go out to eat, but sits there and | pounds and pounds. But he’s success- ful, I guess, judging from the checks | he gets in the mail. * x * x PHE COULD afford much more ex- pensive living quarters, too,” the landlady continued, “but he likes it here. The atmosphere, he calls it, of my place,” Mrs. Murdoch went on a bit proudly. “But a little rest wouldn't hurt the boy. He works too hard, but you know that, darling, being a writer yourself.” “He's such a dynamo that he makes me feel like a sloth,” Jeanne replied. It was extremely warm when Jeanne eame along one afternoon quite fa- tigued after a strenous day of chasing stories for The Star. The young man’s typewriter was clicking furiously as she sauntered along the hall. His door was open and for a mo- ment Jeanne paused, quite taken with the industry of the chap. He was the picture of an author, she agreed. Shirt open at the neck, cigarette alongside him burning, quite neglected, as he beat a steady tattoo on the keys. She watched for a few moments, | quite forgetful that she was an in- terloper—that he might turn at any time from his prodigious output of romance for the radio. * ok ko HE TURNED so suddenly that Jeanne was & trifle embarrassed He His door as he unexpectedly looked up. smiled at her. “Hello, there,” he greeted cordially. His teeth flashed even and white. It took Jeanne a moment or so to recover her composure. “I'm sorry,” she answered. “I was e bit intrigued by the manner in which you work,” she complimented. “I suppose I could unbend for a moment,” he said getting up and mov- ing toward the open door where she stood. “I also suppose I could be less formal with my neighbors, but if I re- lax for & moment it seems I'm behind in my work,” he explained. “I've heard your shows on the air,” Jeanne said. “Well, that's more than I get to do, most of the time,” the young man laughed. “Mrs. Murdoch wa# telling me,” ©©ooo gupm' | 10:00 THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, CaprrraL’s Rapio PROGRAMS Saturday, November 16. Mrs. Murdoch was coming out of his room as Jeanne came along the hall. The landlady trod softly as she ap- proached Jeanne. “He's ill,” she disclosed. “Taken down with a cold and a little fever the other evening. The doctor says he been working too hard.” “Would it be all right for me to go in and see him?” Jeanne asked. He did look wan; and he was ill, Jeanne observed as she entered the room quietly. | “I'll be all right in a day or 50,” he | said as she drew near. “You see I have to be up and about,” he confessed & bit grimly. “I've got work to do.” * “I know the show must go on,” Jeanne said. “Could I be of any assistance to you? The golden years of production he placed at the 15 years between 25 and 40. Einstein wrote his first paper on relativity at 26. Bohr proposed his quantum theory at the age of 32. Dirac discovered relativistic quantum equations at 24. De Broglie discovered the wave properties of matter at 33. These men represent the present cen- tury. If you go back into history you find that the same thing has hap- pened through the centuries. So it appears that, on the whole, the Eu- ropean savant seems to have hit upon an important discovery. Of course, there are exceptions. History will prove that, too. Prove it in abundance. And then comes the rebuttal: A man like Darwin, for example, didn’t produce until he was past 50. And yet it is known that his “Origin of Specles” was in his mind more than 20 years before he published it. Still the question remains: When does & person mature?. One answer is that mental maturity goes hand in hand with physical maturity. If that is s0, the golden years are indeed somewhere between 25 and 40. (Copyright, 1935.) b Spanish Economy.
