4 SILVER STAR HONE, EIGHTH OF 195, OPENS TONORROW Sturdy, Attractive Georgian Colonial Structure at 4849 Upton Strvee‘t. WESTERLEIGH'S FIRST OF MODEL RESIDENCES Outstanding Structural Features‘ Include Stran Steel and Cen- tral Hall Entrance. An attractive, sturdily built house of Georgian Colonial design will be opened to the public tomorrow at | 4849 Upton street, Westerleigh, as| the eighth Silver Star home of 1935. | The home, which will be on exhibi- tion for 30 days under sponsorship of The Star, was built by W. C. & A. N. Miller. It is located in the firm’s newest development of Wester- leigh and is the first model home to be opened in the section. Constructed of brick, painted white, | the new home contains seven rooms, two baths and two lavatories. It was built for sale at $16,950. The Miller firm, one of the foremost developers | in the Capital area, has incorporated | in the Upton street house structural features that are found in their Jarger dwellings in the Spring Valley | and Wesley Heights sections. Classical Furnishings. The home has been completely fur- nished by Mayer & Co. with pieces of classical design which harmonize with the Colonial architecture of the struc= ture. The place was designed by Ed- mond Spano and Gordon McNeil. | A wide corner lot with an unusually | large frontage of 110 feet on Upton | street furnishes an appropriate set-| ting for the home. The plan and exterior appearance are types that probably have the greatest appeal to the American home owner. The white brick walls bring out in pleas- | ing relief the dignified entrance with | its graceful wrought-iron balcony. | The main cornice is accentuated by ; the triglyph treatment of the frieze. | Color contrast is secured with the green of the shutters and the dark slate of the main roof and the rools‘ of the flanking porches. | The attractive home received the unanimous indorsement of the Silver Star Homes Committee, composed of | experts in the various phases of | housing, who carefully examine all| structures placed in competition for | the Silver Star award. The com-| mittee voiced high praise for the pleasing exterior appearance, the lay- out of the floors where no space is wasted, and the solid construction which they thought unusual in a com- paratively small dwelling. Taylor Heads Committee. The Star Committee is headed by James S. Taylor of the Federal Hous- ing Administration, and formerly chief of the division of housing of the| Commerce Department, as chairman. WEATHER 15 CURB 10 CONSTRUCTION Building Permits Drop Off| Sharply in Valuation During Week. Due largely to inclement weather, private construction, as gauged by | building permits issued, dropped off sharply in valuation during the past week. Figures in the office of Build- g Inspector John W. Oehmann re- vealed that permits carrying a total| valuation for future construction of 275,765 were granted during the period. The week's list of permits included 19 one-family dwellings and nine small apartments. The largest permit of the week was issued to Max Gorin, Tower Building, for erection of a two-story brick apartment at 101 Concord avenue, to cost about $40,000. J. G. Herbert was listed as architect. Cooley Bros., also located in the ‘Tower Building, obtained a permit to build four apartments in the 3900 block of W street, at a cost estimated at $32,500. George T.
