BAPTIST GROUPS TOHOLD SESSION Columbia Association to Convene Tuesday—Speak- ers Announced. The midyear meeting of the Co- Jumbia Association of Baptist Churches will be held next Tuesday and Wednesday in Calvary Baptist Church. Charles A. Wells of New ‘York, world traveler, illustrator and lecturer, will be the speaker at the opening session Tuesday evening. It will be a joint meeting of the associa- | tion with the Columbia Federation of | B. Y. P. U. Dr. James H. Franklin, president of the Northern Baptist Convention, will give an address at the Wednesday evening session in Second Baptist Church. Wednesday morning and afternoon sessions will be held in the Second Church, with the Woman’s Missionary Society in charge of the former, and association problems dis- cussed at the latter when the proposed new constitution will be read by E. Hilton Jackson, chairman of the com- mittee. Mrs. George Caleb Moore, president of the Woman's American Baptist Home Misison Society, Northern Bap- tist Convention, and Miss Inabelle B, Coleman of the Southern Foreign Mission Board, will speak Wednesday morning. In the afternoon the “State of Religion in the Churches” will be discussed by all the pastors of Greater ‘Washington. An open forum on “Bap- tist Work in the Nation's Capital” will be led by Dr. Rufus W. Weaver, ex- ecutive secretary of the association. An illustrated lecture on “How We Got Our English Bible” will be given by Dr. Edgar Cordell Powers, District secretary of the American Bible So- ciety. In addition to Dr. Franklin, other speakers in the evening will be Dr. Joseph T. His subject Sunday morn- ing will be “The Greatest Thing in Life.” ‘To honor this anniversary a surprise party was tendered this week to Mr. and Mrs. Ketchum. After a program of music by Mrs. Viola Harper Ketcham and Miss Leona Bixler Mr. Ketchum was escorted by Scoutmaster Herbert C. Tucker and the Boy Scouts of the chapel to the platform and greeted by Mrs. Rosa Putnam, chairman of the evening. Herman A. Meyers, aftef a speech expressing the appreciation and affection of the con- gregation, presented Mr. Ketchum with a handsome silk Geneva pulpit gown. Two large baskets of flowers were presented Mr. and Mrs. Ketchum by Mrs. Florida Brown, speaking on behalf of the congregation. Since the occasion was 50 near Mr. Ketchum's birthday anniversary the refresh- ments included a huge, beautifully decorated cake, lettered with the words “Happy Birthday.” Peck Chapel is an institutional church, embodying, along with its regular church features, a gymnasium which is in constant use. The chapel also maintains a large and thoroughly departmentalized Sunday school. In the near future the chapel will celebrate the 50th anniversary.
