By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, November 13.—Plac- ing steel production at 54 per cent of capacity, a rise of 12 points above last week and the highest since the first week of February, Iron Age in its weekly review asserted today that demand for the metal has expanded in various consuming channels, Conforming to the increase in pro- duction activities, scrap metal prices have strengthened, lifting the publi- cation's composite from $12.58 to $12.75 a ton. “Railroad buying is steadily im- | proving, automotive demand has | shown & further gain, Government- financed construction projects are be- ing expedited, and finally, the expec- tation of higher prices has resulted in considerable anticipatory covering,” the review declared. “The recent advance of $2 & ton on billets, blooms, slabs and skelp is pri- marily responsible for the current movement to get under cover on fin- ished steel. The approach of the year-end inventory period would or- dinarily discourage stocking by con- sumers, but numerous requests for re- quirement contracts for the remainder of the quarter indicate that many in the trade rate protection against price advances above other considerations. “Although increased material costs and the possibility of wage advances at the mills would seem to make higher 71)\. | finished steel prices inevitable, definite ‘moves in that direction are still lack- ing. | “The reluctance of certain mills to disturb existing quotations is reflected | | in reports that prices of shares, plates, | bars and pipe will remain unchanged, | | at least for the time being." \ Washington Produce One-pound prints (62 score), -pound prints (90 score i 1°Pound brints (8D scorer. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, November 13.—Low basic one-way passenger rates on Western railroads have been permanently adopted, Hugh S. Siddall, chairman of the Western Passenger Association, announced today, due to a sharp up- turn in business. “Since the Western railways de- cided to take the initiative with re- duced passenger fares in December, 1933, passenger traffic on those lines | has jumped 50 per cent,” Siddall said. | “In the first eight months of this year passenger revenues have climbed nearly $6,000,000 and accounted for the entire advance in total railroad revenues in the West.” The rates are 3 cents a mile, first- class accommodations: 2 cents a mile, | coaches; tourist sleepers on transcontinental trips. Round-trip reduced rates have not been made permnn nt, Siddall said. LOANS ,pt 'lll Make First 51/,7 (4 Real Estate Mortgage and Guaranty Corporation 1610 K St. N.W.
