NEW YORK, November 13.—On the basis of income reports of 234 impor- tant companies now available, third quarter earnings of industriat corpo- rations are 68.6 per cent more than a year ago. This rise was made possible by an 18 per cent expansion of indus- trial activity, illustrating the more | rapid progress of profits than of sales |in a recovery movement, given rea- sonable stability of prices and ex- penses. Of the 26 major industries repre- sented, only four made less satisfac- tory reports than a year ago—adver- tising (including printing and pub- lishing), coal, food products and to- | bacco. | The steel industry transformed a | large loss in the third quarter of last year into a fair sized profit this year, | reflecting svbstantially higher opera- | tions. Automobile producers greatly improved their earnings, despite the September close déwns for model changes. Auto parts manufacturers made an even better relative showing. The same is true of machinery | companles. | With industrial production for the current quarter likely to be around 15 per cent higher than a year ago, earn- | ings will again be up substantially.
