Mrs. Harriett E. Avis, widow of .?.he youngest man to enlist in the Con- federate Army, who herself as a child secured the court-martial of a soldier following a raid on her mother’s pan- try, died yesterday at her home, 2701 Connecticut avenue, Mrs. Avis, who was 80, had been ill for three menths. Up to that time she was exceptionally active, keeping posted on national politics and taking a keen interest in antique furniture, of which she had a sizable collec- tion. Husband Was Drummer. Mrs. Avis' husband, the late Brax- ton Avis, enrolled as a drummer boy with the Confederates. His father was a captain and served under Gen. Robert E. Lee. Before that he was active in the hanging of John Brown after the Harpers Ferry raid. Mrs. Avis clearly recalled incidents | of the Civil War, when as a child | she witnessed much of the fighting | up and down the Shenandoah Valley. !
