United States Governments encountered a slight amount of profit taking and turned | somewhat irregular, while domestic corporate loans and foreign issues | stuck to a narrow range, with the undertone fairly steady Three issues of Government bonds held unchanged, two others showed declines of 2-32 to 4-32 and the re- maining active loans showed advanc of around 3-32. The turnover W light. In the corporate section low-priced | rails were by far the most active and gains were fairly well spread out over the group. All five issues of Mis- souri-Kansas-Texas bonds were active and higher, with the best showing made by the 4'zs of 1978, up 3': points at 341:. Other rail issues im- proving included Santa Fe 4s, Balti- more & Ohio 4!s, Erie 5s, New York Central 55 and Southern Railway 4s. Industrial and utility bonds did not | do so well. Texas Corp. 5s, Columbla‘ Gas & Electric 55, Kansas Gas & Electric 5s, and North American 5s were among others yielding small fractions. Slightly higher prices were paid for Youngstown Sheet & Tube 5s, Western Union 5s, United Drug 5s and International Telephone 5s. Foreign bonds continued to work higher. Italian 7s were “; of a point higher at 53!;; Uruguay 6s gained '» at 39 and German (Dawes) 7s were 1 higher at 39. Washington Exchange SALES. National 2100, 925 15th St. N.W, This was equal to $1.44 MORE STEEL USED AT AUTO PLANTS Heavier Releases Reported, but National Qutput Holds Unchanged. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, October 16.—The cur- rent week offers convincing evidence that the long-looked-for support from automobile manufacturers is commenc- cording to the weekly trade review of | Iron Age. Heavier releases for sheets, bars and strip steel are reported in all districts | surrounding the automobile area, the review says, and the week’s most | significant gains in steel production were reported from Cleveland and the | valleys. Production was reported as | unchanged at Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Buffalo and Wheeling and the national output remained at 52 per cent of capacity largely because of a 3! per | cent drop at Chicago. Motor Trend Watched. “Production has apparently risen as high as it can without the benefit of heavy automobile tonnage,” the review states. “Ingot production this week is unchanged at 52 per cent of capacity, the level from which it has not flunc- tuated more than one-half point in the lost six weeks. This period coincided almost exactly with the low point in automobile assemblies, occasioned by the Fall change to new models. Under | the circumstances, the trend of auto- | motive steel releases is being watched more carefully than usual.” Railroad buying is still absent from the industry, the review says, but in- | Jects a hopeful note with the observa- | tion that: “Prospects are much better in the Midwest, where a shortage of freight cars is becoming more pro- nounced. Some of the carriers have finally admitted that they must either buy rolling stock or undertake large repair programs.” Demand for construction steel re- mains at a low ebb, the review says, although the amount of work now pending which calls for large tonnages continues to grow. The demand from |farm implement makers continues to form one of the sustaining factors of | the present production schedule, the review says, adding that miscellanecus demand remains good. | Note of Caution Sounded. A note of caution was sounded by the review in dealing with the situa- tion at Detroit. where the industry's hopes for a better demand is centered. “Although Detroit reeks with its usual optimism regarding motor car produc- tion,” the review says, “skepticism persists in some quarters. The Novem- ber change to new models still remains an experiment and the fact that so few important innovations in design have been made has led to the belief that Winter selling may not be as easy as it now looks. However, the industry stands to benefit in the long run, as new modeLs are 50 to 175 pounds heavier. The Iron Age composite price for steel scrap is unchanged from the pre- 1viuus week at $12.67 a ton. Composite | prices for pig iron and finished steel | continue respectively at $17.84 a ton and 2.130 cents a pound. NEW YORK BAR SILVER. NEW YORK.
