Cav- anagh, general manager of the Chi- cago Motor Club, credited schoolboy traffic patrols yesterday with reducing the motor accident rate among school children far below that of any other age group. ‘The safety patrols’ work supplies the “one bright spot * * * in the otherwise gloomy picture” of grow- ing highway tragedies, Cavanagh said a statement answering ‘‘some criticism” of the patrol system. “In the twelve years from 1922 to 1934, the annual automobile death. toll increased from 14,000 to 36,100 persons,” he said. “Throughout the United States boys | and girls from 5 to 9 years of age have shown a better accident record than any other age group, succeed- ing in bringing down their death rate 25 per cent in 12 years. Almost as remarkable is the record of the group from 10 to 14 years of age which ! showed only a 3 per cent increase. “The credit for this remarkable achievement is owing directly to the teachers who have so diligently in- structed the children in ways to avoid autcmobile accidents and to the pro- tection afforded by the school safety patrols.” | TOKIO HAILS ELECTION | TOKIO, October 16 (#).—Official | Japan hailed the sweeping Liberal party victory in Monday's Canadian elections as presaging an early ter- mination of Japanese-Canadian trade conflicts. The foreign office said the govern- ment hoped speedily to open nego- | tiations which would lead to the lay- ing down of tariff weapons and the conclusion of a new trade agreement. | THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. €., WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 16, 1935. cording to word received here from assoclation headquarters in Chicago.
