B8 GERMANY EXCITED AS BALLOT NEARS Memel Elections Tension Comparable With Saar Plebiscite. By the Associated Press. BERLIN, September 27.—The ap- | proach of the Memel territory elec- | tions aroused a state of exmemenfl in the Third Reich today considered | generally comparable to the tension during the plebiscite which returned | the Saar to Germany. | The elections became an absorbing topic for German newspapers. Al- leged discrimination against the Ger- T man population in the territory, for- merly German and now Lithuanian, was the target for press attacks. Huge Victory Predicted. The newspapers nevertheless pre- dicted an overwhelming victory for the German element in the election, at the same time charging the Lith nian Voting Commission with “having agreed already on methods to be taken for forging the election re- sults.” Editorial voices were raised in a demand that Germany participate in control of the elections next Sunday. The same attitude also was taken by the Reich foreign office, which asked equal participation with Lithuania in election control. This attitude was interpreted in political circles as an opening for Lithuania to attempt to alleviate ill feeling here toward its management of Memel affairs. 90 Per Cent Germans.
