A—14 (CITIZENS INDORSE SAFETY CAMPAIGN ‘Conduit Road Association Members Promise to Sign Pledges. The Conduit Road Citizens' Asso- | ciation last night pledged its unani- | + mous support to The Star's campaign | to curtail the toll of traffic deaths and accidents. All members said they would sign the safety pledge. 4 The civic unit's indorsement was | . contained in a resolution which de- scribed the safety drive as “a splendid | and timely movement.” Before vot- ing the group heard several safety talks Capt. Ellis R. King called particular . attention to conditions on Conduit road, declaring reckless and speeding drivers are increasing in number on this highway and “are endangering the lives of our children at all hours of the day and night.” Construction of a new bridge to re- place the old Chain Bridge structure, a project long sought by the associa- tion. was the subject of a long report by Capt. King. Later the association | gave King and Clyde S. Bailey au- thority to take steps to get funds for this project included in the 1937 budget estimates. King recalled that last year the as- sociation abandoned its fight for a high-level bridge when District offi- cials indicated they favcred construc- tion of a low-level superstructure on the present piers. The oject also| is being sought by the Board of Trade and several Virginia civic bodies. On motion of Mrs. Charles T. Goude, the group adopted a resolution urging 21l chain stores.in the District to close their doors at 6 p.m. on Saturdays. Establishment of a fare of six tick- ets for 50 cents instead of the flat 10- cent fare on the Foxhail Village-Poto- mac Heights bus line was demanded | of the Capital Transit Co. Officials | also were asked to remedy overcrowded | conditions on these busses. 1 After a long discussion of traffic | conditions on M street at Key Bridge, a special committee was named to seek a lengthening of time for the “Go” signal for east-bound traffic on | M street and, if feasible, m&mlla!lonj of a traffic light for inbound Virginia | traffic | In other actions the group protested the low flving of airplanes over the| Conduit road section aud asked that Chain Bridge road be widened and | straightened DOROTHY GISH DIVORCE APPROVED IN NEW YORK State Referee Holds J. During the week he would use liquor mod- erately, but at week ends he would use it to excess. At such times he would come home in the early hours of the morning. and plaintiff would asually remain awake, waiting for him to come.” The couple was married in Green- wich, December 26, 1920. The referee's repcrt said Rennie often would Bring other men and wom. en home with him and that Miss Gish “would appeal to him to change his habits, telling him that it was under- | mining her health and interfering with her work as an actress, but to no avail.” the Associated Press. | with Radio’s “Sally” HELEN STEWART, Veteran Washington radio star. who has started a new morning series on WJSV called “Sally at the Switchboard.” She takes the role of a telephone operator at a popular hotel and, of course, knows everything that goes on. Shortly before he sailed, Kennedy maintained he had made absolutely no plans for the future. but he told friends he would help the President in the coming campaign if asked to do 0. The erstwhile chairman has had more offers for his services in private life than he has been able to study. He has declined to make any decisions on these offers. and probably will not until he returns to this country. U. THE EVENING ROBINSON DISCOUNTS THIRD PARTY THREAT Senator Declares Roosevelt and Garner Certain to Be Demo- cratio Choices. By the Associated Press. ARKADELPHIA, Ark., September 27.—Democratic Majority Leader Joe T. Robinson analyzed Republican pres- idential possibilities last night with STAR, WASHINGTON, the assertion that there is nothing to indicate a third party threat in the 1936 election and that “Who- ever is chosen on the Republican ticket must accomplish a political rev- olution to win.” “Roosevelt and Garner are certain to receive the Democratic nomina- tion,” declared the Arkansas Senator. He listed among Republican presiden- tial possibilities Senators Borah of Idaho, Johnson of California, Van- denberg of Michigan, Dickinson of Towa, La Follette of Wisconsin, Norris of Nebraska and Gov. Landon of Kansas. D. C, Robinson said that Borah and John- son missed their opportunities when they declined the nomination for vice presidency on the ticket with Harding; that Vandenberg may re- ceive the nomination unless some- thing arises to divert the current from him; that Dickinson's “efforts to be liberal or progressive detract from his availability” as a gominee; that it is doubtful that La Follette would accept a nomination on a third ticket and there is “no probability” of his being tendered the reguiar nomination; that Norris’ ambition “has diminished with advancing FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1935. years,” and Landon, while not as well I known nationally, has demonstrated his executive ability and may increase in strength between now and the con- vention.
