NEW YORK, September 21.—Lead- ing curb shares steadied today follow- ing the selling disturbances of the two preceding sessions. Activity was restricted, transfers approximating 118,000 shares com- pared with 126,000 & week 8g0. Aluminum Co. of America extended its recent firm tendencies, advancing some 3 points to 67. Gulf Ofl was up a point at 60, while issues holding to level ground included American Gas & Electric at 32%, International Petroleum at 33%, Electric Bond & Share at 11 and Distillers Corp.-Sea- .grams at 24'5. A. O. Smith dipped 2 points to 46. Chicago Grain By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, September 21.—Refus- ing to take Italy’s “no” today as a final rejection of peace offers, the wheat market responded with a mod- erate downturn of prices. Cautiousness in regard to passible surprise developments in Europe over Sunday ruled dealings, especially as - trade drew to an end. A firm under- tone in wheat values was evident, with rallies easily achieved, and the bulk of selling appearing to come from recent buyers who were in & positioni to realize profits. ‘Wheat in Chicago closed unsettled #:-1% under yesterday's finish; De- cember, 99'5-1; cnm, 15 off to 3% up; decline to !2 advance, and provmmu varying from 5 cents setback to an equal gain. From the outset, sharp attention of Chicago wheat traders was given to weakness of foreign markets. Liver- pool wheat quotations in particular were noticed as showing a material decline, whereas an advance there had been looked for. Cables attributed this decline to profit taking, but the immediate effect here was bearish, and did much to restrain any out- burst of unusual buying enthusiasm. A good deal of comment was heard that the action of Italy was only a beginning of . negotiations and that her stand could be regarded as yet but a preliminary one. Meanwhile, word of a pause in overseas demand for wheat shipments acted as some- thing of a handicap for values. On the other hand, reports current left scant room for doubt as to serious- ness of the foreign political situation. Furthermore, Argentine advices men- tioned no substantial relief from drought. Corn and oats developed relative firmness after first sympathizing with wheat price downturns. Cash houses were buyers of corn futures. There was much spreading, with December corn being purchased against sales of May. Rye chiefly followed wheat. Provisions averaged higher. Offer- ings of lard were meager and shorts were buyers.
