-PANICKY SELLING - *™\- Marquette 5s at 91, Sante Fe 4s at 4 quiet but still somewhat recessionary. ~ ~y FINANCIAL. INBONDS SUBSIDES Some Foreign Issues Re- main Weak, but Recoveries Are General. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, September 21.—The best that could be said of today's bond market was that it displayed & steadler tone with the subsidence of yesterday’s somewhat panicky sell- Traders and investors seemed to feel a little better about the European war situation despite the rejection of the Mussolini cabinet of the League of Nations peace proposals. The in- terpretation of Rome’s “no” to Geneva was that it did not have an emphatic ring and that a loophole was left open for further negotiations. Although some further weakness was observed in scattered foreign obligations, due largely to thinness of the market, recoveries were gen- eral among those issues that have recently been under pressure. Italian Sovernment 7s rallied 3 points to 59%. Milan City 6'ss were up 2 at 44%, and Rome gained 11} at 47!4. French Ts lost at 2% at 174'g, but the T'és were unchanged at 174. British bonds came back to around their Friday's closing levels. The Associated Press averages of domestic industrials and rails were off .1 and .Z of a point, respectively, dnd that for the utilities was un- changed. The foreign composite edged up .1 of a point. Transfers of all bonds totaled $5,941,000 par value, against $5,176,000 last Saturday. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, Sept. 21.—Further larger purchases of copper brought an additional advance of 'z cent to 9 cents per pound for electrolytic in the domestic this week. The tense European situation stim- | ulated buying for export at advances of fully %4 cent. With domestic comrmitments thus far in September in excess of 80.000 tons, following purchases of 125,000 tons in August, consumers are said to have supplied needs well ahead and buying was reduced sharply at | the advance, but the undertone ruled | firm with the approach of the export price to within a fraction of domes- | tic quotations. Lead and zinc prices were bolh marked up $3 per ton during the | week in response to sustained con- sumer buying. In the lead market, | this demand represented practically | all branches of the trade and ex- ceeded smelters’ daily ore intake. The advance in zinc preceded that in lead by several days. | recorded in certain types of leather. /in a substantial manner, Cotton Exports Remain Smaller Than Last Year By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, September 21.—Ex- ports of cotton this week totaled 94,000 bales, compared with 86,000 in the like week last season, according to the New York Cotton Exchange. ‘This brought exports for the season to date to 422,000 bales, compared with 512,000 in the corresponding period last season. The world visible supply of Ameri- can cotton totals 3,743,000 bales com- pared with 3,426,000 a week ago and 5,542,000 at this date last year. Commodity Price Changes for Week BY H. N. McGILL. Ecitor. McGlll Commodity Service, Inc., Auburndale, Mass. AUBURNDALE, Mass., September 21 (#).—Commodity prices during the past week again advanced sharply, establishing the price level of all products at a new high point of 74.9 (1926 equaling 100). This is the high- est point reached since October, 1930. Since Midsummer the cost of living has increased and > higher level for producing costs has also been recorded, which is the principal bankground supporting the strengthening in the majority of individual commodity groups. A week agu out of 14 indi- vidual groups 10 units advanced, only 1 declined and 3 remained un- changed. This week advances were recorded in seven groups as against only two declines, and five unchanged. Industrial prices recorded the third consecutive increase, which was in alignment -vith further stimulation in total business activity. Farm Prices Advance. Agricultural prices also gained ground, reaching the highest level since last May. During the week higher prices were recorded for wheat, corn, oats, barley, rye, cotton, pea- nuts, potatoes, wool, sugar and flax- seed. The only decreases were noted in dairy products—butter and eggs. Live stock prices represented one of the two groups that registered price weakness during the week. The moderate price increase in’cattle was more than counteracted by lower quotations for hogs, sheep and lambs. Hide and leather index jumped up sharply under the leadership of a one-half cent increase in hides, repre- senting a new high for the year of 14, cents. Price strength was also Non-ferrous metals bounded up- ward, with price strength prevailing in antimony, copper, lead, tin and zinc. Paint materials also moved upward reflecting price strength in linseed oil, red lead, rosin and turpentine. Coarse Textiles Down. Coarse textiles represent the only other group, in addition to live stock, that decreased. This was entirely due to lower quotations for burlap | and jute. Vegetable oils ruled higher despite the fact that the price trend was mixed. Lower prices for coconut, corn and cottonseed oil were more than offset by price strength in lin- seed, China wood and soya bean oil. Most important price changes in the McGill weekly comu.odity index (1926 equaling 100) were as follows: Live stock Non-ferrous metals Daily Price Index. N ORK.
