RANI][][PH LEIGH 10 OPPOSE GLASS Says Senator Must Be De- feated to Protect Roosevelt. Randolph Leigh of Fairfax County, Va, who for 10 years directed the National Oratorical Contest, last night announced his candidacy for the Virginia Democratic Senatorial nomination next year in opposition to Senator Carter Glass. Mr. Leigh, also known as & lec- turer. asserted in a statement last night: “If Roosevelt is to carry Vir- ginia in the general election Glass must be defeated in the primaries.” Leigh said he had concluded that “Roosevelt represents the one way out for America,” and that the Demo- cratic party “in Virginia is a house divided against itself.” His statement follows: “The Democratic party in Virginia is a house divided against itself. Its senior Senator is the very head and forefront of the opposition to its Democratic President. At the same time its rank and file membership believes in the President and wishes him re-elected. A showdown, there- fore, is at hand. If Roosevelt is to carry Virginia in the general election, Glass must be defeated in the pri- maries. No one can consistently sup- port both Glass and Roosevelt. To | attempt it is to mock logic and invite | defeat. l Out for Senate I “One Way Out for U. S.” | “I myself have in the past criticized | various administration policies. How- | ever, after spending the first four| months of this year in Europe study- | ing policies there, and after cbserving | events here at home since, I have| concluded that Roosevelt represents | the one way out for America. In Europe (with whom we do our essen= tial foreign business) I found & cen- tralization so thorough that we can- not cope with it without centraliza- tion of our own. I saw that Euro- pean centralization employed ruth- lessly against the individual. Here in the United States I find that| Roosevelt has had the courage to! insist upon that degree of centraliza- | tion which is inevitable, but has actu- | ally used it to the advantage of the | average citizen, instead of to his hurt. “I find, furthermore, the lines being drawn here for a finish fight between the forces of reaction and those of progress. This fight is to be so fu- rious and so fundamental that, in the face of it, one cannot stand too much on technicalities, or quibble over de- tails. It is to be an issue drawn in the large! ’32 Foes Seen Active. “The forces overthrown in 1932 | are reshaping for the fray. Devoid of an adequate program and an accept- | able leader, they hope to win by re- lentlessly sniping upon the President. They purpose thus to put the whole | liberal tradition at bay, and to bring | down its greatest living exponent. In such a crisis, brushing all else aside, | 1 take my stand with the President. | “One of the most devastating of | these snipers upon the administration has been Senator Glass, whose shots have been doubly damaging because fired at the close range which his party uniform gives him. “I do not question the Senator’s right to free speech, or to shift from one party to another.
