Through the courtyard Lady Beth ran, into the eerie, rock-hewn temple, and there she concealed herself behind a pillar. By the lights which illumined the fire gods, she saw Arbela in the center of the great hall, tied to a stake and encircled by Baalites. STAR, WASHINGTON, Hopelessly she watched and waited, while for hours the Canaanites marched around their victim, shout- ing insults and curses. Ther. began the most hor- rible ceremony Lady Beth had ever witnessed. Niarchus gave the signal: “Let her be scourged by the lash of the gods!” FTAC Forthwith a strange machine was trundled out and set before Arbela. It was a giant wheel equipped with a score of knotted thongs. A young man seized the crank and began to turn. The wheel spun. Whips flew out and beat against the almost naked body of Arbela. THURSDAY, AUGUST 8, 1935. —By EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS Flecks of ruby blood jeweled her snowy skin. Her face writted in agony, but she did not cry out. Lady Beth shuddered, then lost control of herself. Caution and discretion vanisted. “Stop! Stop!” she cried, and ran down among the fanatic, blood- Baalites! of beginning all its own stations with the “CR” call letters. | * Prom Ottawa it is also reported that Jacques Cartier, vice chairman of the Radio Comsitission, has Tesigned to become an organizer for the Conserva- tive party in his home Province of | Quebec.
