The opening club bid was one which £ g very popular at this tourna- | m hat of & short minor in pref- erence to a no-trump or weak major— in order to give free play to “one-over- one” possibilities. North's two-heart overcall was in the nature of a mild pre-empt and, of course, East's bid is self-evident The opening lead was the heart 6, | which South won, and returned the gpade jack. The queen finesse held, | the ace was laid down and another spade ruffed. Then seven rounds of trumps were led, Kaiser refusing to ruff out either his losing heart or los- ing spade, electing instead to play for & squeeze for an extra trick. The lead of the last trump forced South to dis- card one diamond as the declarer still | held the spade deuce. North equally was squeezed as the declarer also held | the heart jack and he, too, Was forced | to drop a diamond. A small diamond ‘was then played, won by the ace, and the king took the next trick, while the diamond deuce won the last trick for & total of 12. At the other table the hand was ruffed out for five odd. _— e Historical Swords for Sale.
