NEW YORK, August 7.—Comment- ing on the higher rate of steel pro- duction, Iron Age says the bellef is becoming widespread that it “really represents the beginning of a long pull out of hard times.” Any letdown in the rate of advance, it states, “is expected to be temporary, to be followed by renewed expansion in September and October.” The Re- view said production rose to 47°per cent of capacity, a gain of slightly more than 2 per cent over the pre- vious week. ‘The survey based its views on the absence of speculative buying and the “astonishing growth” of miscellaneous buying, sustained consumer purchas- ing of automobiles and accumulating activity in the heavy industries. “Pronounced buoyancy of scrap the most sensitive barometer of the steel trade,” was also cited by the publication. It said scrap prices had risen further “in virtually all market centers,” holsting the Iron Age scrap composite from $11.58 a ton to $11.83 a ton, the highest since the third week in February. The report stated, however, that there are indications that production may soon level off. In this connection it pointed out that the interruption in motor car output is “merely temporary to allow for model change- overs.” Furthermore, it said, “prospects for the remainder of the yesr are re- garded as excellent. “Most encouraging and significant machinery and equipment represent- ing the capital goods industries,” it was disclosed. e U. Loss of Markets For U. S. Cotton Laid to Control By the Assoclated Press. NEW ORLEANS, August 7.—The New Orleans Cotton Exchange in its annual report released today placed the blame for the loss of foreign cotton markets upon the Government cotton program. “While conditions prevailing in in- ternational finance are recognized as contributing to the decline of Amer- ican-grown cotton’s supremacy in world trade,” the report, signed by Henry Plauche, secretary, said, “it is an inescapable conclusion that governmental policles attempting to hold prices above the world’s ideas of values are the principal and con- stantly accelerating cause of decreased consumption of cotton and the loss of our dominating position in the cotton trade of the world.” _— INVESTMENT TRUSTS NEW YORK.
