THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C., TUESDAY, JULY 30, 1935. ROOSEVELT BACKS [Philadelphia Orchestra NEW POWER SITE Asks Favorable Action on Bonneville Dam De- - velopment. By the Associated Press. President Roosevelt has thrown his support behind a proposal to develop & power project at the Bonneville Dam in Oregon. A bill to carry this out was intro- duced yesterday by Senators McNary and Steiwer, both Republicans of Ore- gon, and the President asked “early and favorable consideration” for it in & letter to Chairman Copeland, Demo- crat, of New York, of the Senate Com- merce Committee. Steiwer sald there 'was little intention of seeking passage of the legislation at this session. May Be Yardstick, ‘While not intended to parallel the Tennessee Valley power development, Steiwer said the Bonneville project may “incidentally” act as & “yardstick™ for measuring power charges in the country. But he termed it an “unfair” yardstick because the site is the “most favorable in the world.” Steiwer said the Booneville project, inaugurated more than a year ago to improve navigation on the Col- umbia above Portland, will be com= pleted in about two years. Approved by Agencies. In his letter on the bill, the Presi- dent said: “Senator McNery has introduced a bill autherizing the completion, main- tenance and operation of certain navi- gation facilities on the Columbia River, now under construction, known as the Bonneville Dam. “The bill has been considered by the chief of engineers, the Federal Power Commission and the Attorney General. All agree that the proposed legislation is desirable and necessary to the development of the project. “In view of this I concur. May I ask that your committee give early and favorable consideration to tha bil?” WORTHLESS LAND WON AT POKER YIELDS OIL Chief of Police of Hollywood Studio Kept 40-Acre Montana Ranch for 12 Years. His formerly worthless property, 29 miles west of Shelby, is in the new Cutbank oil fleld district. For the 12 years he has owned it Young rented the ranch to a sheep herder for $4 a year.
