During the week shipments were 5 per cent above output; new business was 1 per cent in excess. But total production gained 41 per cent over that of the corresponding week of 1934; shipments were 51 per cent heavier and new business was 63 per cent heavier than during the 1934 week. These comparisons are based upon 1eports to the National Lumber Man- ufacturers’ Association from regional associations covering the operations of 614 leading hardwood and softwood mills. During the week ended July 6, these produced 130,000,000 feet; shipped 136,630,000 feet; booked or- ders of 131,384,000 feet. JULY 16, 1935. CLIMB CONTINUES INMACHINE TRADE Reports From Nearly All|g Areas Indicate Sales Above Expectations. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, July 16.—Statements from almost every section of the coun- try indicate that machine tool and machinery sales are continuing at a level much above what had been ex- pected for this Summer, says the American Machinist. “Several machine tool builders are booked solidly well into the Autumn and a few are quoting 1936 deliveries. Part of this situation is due, of course, to the shortage of certain types of skilled men, and manufacturers are being hard put to satisfy customers and maintain code hours, while at the same time they are under pressure from their men to lengthen the work week. The placing of nearly $5,000,- 000 worth of Russian business recently has helped the machine tool picture somewhat. “Boston reports a fading off of in- +|quiry but a fairly well sustained flow of orders. New York has suffered a sharp drop in activity during the cur- rent month. In Philadelphia the tone |is better, but buying has not been quite up to expectations. Pittsburgh distributors, on the other hand, are finding July an active month. Orders are well up to the average for the last three months, and that average was pretty good. “Labor troubles in Cleveland are | less numerous than for some weeks Business is at a higher level than it was in January, but is not quite up to the May peak. Detroit reports some dropping off in orders, but expects a sharp recovery not later than August 20. Orders for replace- | INSURANCE STOCKS (P).—New York Bid. o NEW YORK. The wholesale commodity price level, | according to the index of the National Fertilizer Association, was slightly |lower in the week ended July 13. 3 | This index declined to 77.4 per cent of | the 1926-1928 average, from 775 in i3 \ the preceding week. A month ago the | index was 77.8 and a year ago 72.0. Three of the 14 component groups included in the index declined during *zhe week and three advanced. The | principal decline, and the one which was largely responsible for the drop |in the composite index, was in the grains, feeds and live stock group. Thé decline in this group occurred in spite of the fact that corn prices ue | moved upward and hog prices during |the week reached the highest mark | since October, 1930. | Grains, other than corn, as well as hay, feedstuffs, cattle and lambs, moved downward. Thirteen items in- cluded in this group declined last week, while advances were registered | by five. A slight drop took place in the foods group, although five items | in this group advanced and only three declined. The decline in the fertilizer mate- rials index was caused primarily by a | drop in net prices of potash salts. The |largest advance in group indexes oc- curred in the fats and oils group; ad- vances and declines of individual quo- tations were equal in number, but the more heavily weighted items, lard, butter and cottonseed oil, moved up- ward. Increased prices for lead and | tin resulted in a slight rise in the inetals group index. Prices of 34 commodities included in the composite index declined in ments are being placed now and some | that 1o real Summer slump will de- price last week, while 26 advanced: in important ‘programs’ for the Fall a being discussed. In Indianapolis busi- ness is continuing. at a very good level | for this time of year, and prospects for the rest of the year are decidedly | favorable. “Cincinnati also reports a reml:k-, ably high level of orders for this | velop. ' Business continues to be un- usually good in the district around Chicago. Plenty of good prospects are Hn view and the trade is optimistic. |On the West Coast this Summer is | the best in & number of years.
